Premium & Discount Zones — Complete Trading Framework
Master the Premium and Discount concept to know exactly WHERE to buy and sell. The institutional framework for identifying optimal trade zones.
The Foundation: Why Premium & Discount Matters
Every successful institutional trader understands one core principle: buy cheap, sell expensive. In Smart Money Concepts, this translates to buying in Discount zones and selling in Premium zones.
Bullish entries ONLY in Discount (below 50%). Bearish entries ONLY in Premium (above 50%). This single rule eliminates most bad trades and dramatically improves your R:R.
Understanding the Dealing Range
A Dealing Range is the distance between a significant swing high and swing low. It represents the current "playing field" where price is operating.
Swing High ─────────────── $2,450 (Premium extreme)
│
│ PREMIUM ZONE (above 50%)
│ ───── 75% level ─────── $2,437.50
│ (Deep premium - best sells)
│
│ ───── Equilibrium 50% ── $2,425 (Fair value)
│
│ DISCOUNT ZONE (below 50%)
│ ───── 25% level ─────── $2,412.50
│ (Deep discount - best buys)
│
Swing Low ──────────────── $2,400 (Discount extreme)
Calculating the Levels:
Range = Swing High - Swing Low
Example: $2,450 - $2,400 = $50
Equilibrium (50%) = Swing Low + (Range × 0.5) = $2,425
Premium (75%) = Swing Low + (Range × 0.75) = $2,437.50
Discount (25%) = Swing Low + (Range × 0.25) = $2,412.50
The Trading Rules
For BULLISH Setups (Buying):
| Zone | Action | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| Deep Discount (0-25%) | STRONG BUY zone | Highest |
| Discount (25-50%) | BUY zone | High |
| Equilibrium (50%) | Neutral — can go either way | Medium |
| Premium (50-75%) | DO NOT BUY | Low |
| Deep Premium (75-100%) | NEVER BUY here | Very Low |
For BEARISH Setups (Selling):
| Zone | Action | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| Deep Premium (75-100%) | STRONG SELL zone | Highest |
| Premium (50-75%) | SELL zone | High |
| Equilibrium (50%) | Neutral | Medium |
| Discount (25-50%) | DO NOT SELL | Low |
| Deep Discount (0-25%) | NEVER SELL here | Very Low |
How Institutions Use Premium & Discount
Institutional traders (banks, hedge funds) follow this logic:
- They accumulate positions in Discount — Buying when price is "cheap"
- They distribute positions in Premium — Selling when price is "expensive"
- They manipulate price INTO their zones — Engineering price to Discount to buy, or to Premium to sell
- They never chase — If price is in Premium and they want to buy, they WAIT for a pullback to Discount
This is why price often:
- Sweeps highs (Premium) then drops — institutions distributed
- Sweeps lows (Discount) then rises — institutions accumulated
Multi-Timeframe Premium & Discount
The most powerful application is using P&D across multiple timeframes:
The Nested Approach:
DAILY: Identify the major dealing range
└── Price is in Daily DISCOUNT ✓ (bullish bias)
4H: Within Daily discount, find 4H dealing range
└── Wait for price to reach 4H DISCOUNT ✓
1H/15M: Within 4H discount, find entry
└── Enter at OB/FVG in 1H DISCOUNT ✓
When ALL timeframes align in the same P&D zone, you get the highest probability setups.
Example: Triple Discount Confluence
- Daily: Price in discount of weekly range (below 50% of weekly swing)
- 4H: Price in discount of daily range (below 50% of daily swing)
- 15M: OB entry in discount of 4H range (below 50% of 4H swing)
- Result: Buying at the cheapest possible level across all timeframes = exceptional R:R
Practical Application: Step by Step
Setup Process:
-
Draw the HTF Dealing Range
- On Daily/4H, identify the most recent significant swing high and swing low
- Draw the Fibonacci tool from swing low to swing high (or use manual lines)
- Mark 50% (Equilibrium), 75% (Premium), 25% (Discount)
-
Determine Your Bias
- If HTF structure is bullish → look for BUYS in Discount
- If HTF structure is bearish → look for SELLS in Premium
-
Wait for Price to Enter Your Zone
- Don't trade if price is at Equilibrium (50%) — wait for it to pull into your zone
- Best entries come from the 61.8-78.6% retracement area (OTE within P&D)
-
Find Your Entry Trigger
- In Discount: Look for bullish OB, bullish FVG, or bullish CHOCH
- In Premium: Look for bearish OB, bearish FVG, or bearish CHOCH
-
Execute with Proper Risk
- Stop: Beyond the dealing range extreme
- Target: The opposite side (Premium if you bought Discount, Discount if you sold Premium)
Real Trade Examples
Trade 1: EUR/USD — Discount Buy
4H Dealing Range: 1.0780 (swing low) to 1.0920 (swing high)
- Range: 140 pips
- Equilibrium (50%): 1.0850
- Discount zone: Below 1.0850
- Deep Discount (25%): 1.0815
What happened:
- Price pulled back from 1.0920 to 1.0810 (deep discount ✓)
- Bullish OB at 1.0800-1.0815 (in deep discount ✓)
- 15M bullish CHOCH at the OB
- Entry: 1.0812 | Stop: 1.0790 (22 pips) | Target: 1.0910 (98 pips)
- Result: +98 pips, 4.5R ✅
Trade 2: Gold — Premium Sell
1H Dealing Range: $2,380 (swing low) to $2,440 (swing high)
- Range: $60
- Equilibrium (50%): $2,410
- Premium zone: Above $2,410
- Deep Premium (75%): $2,425
What happened:
- Gold rallied from $2,380 to $2,432 (deep premium ✓)
- Bearish OB at $2,428-$2,435 (in deep premium ✓)
- BSL swept at $2,440 (previous high taken)
- 5M bearish MSS with FVG
- Entry: $2,430 | Stop: $2,438 ($8) | Target: $2,395 ($35)
- Result: +$35, 4.4R ✅
P&D Combined with Other Concepts
Premium & Discount becomes even more powerful when combined:
| Combination | Power Level |
|---|---|
| OB in correct P&D zone | ⭐⭐⭐ Strong |
| OB + FVG in correct P&D zone | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very Strong |
| OB + FVG + Liquidity sweep in correct P&D | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Institutional grade |
| All above + Kill Zone timing | 💎 Maximum confluence |
Common Mistakes
❌ Buying in Premium — If price is above 50% of the dealing range, do NOT take bullish trades. Wait for a pullback to discount.
❌ Selling in Discount — If price is below 50%, do NOT take bearish trades. Wait for a rally to premium.
❌ Using the wrong dealing range — The dealing range must be RELEVANT to your timeframe. Don't use a 5M dealing range for a 4H trade.
❌ Ignoring structure — P&D alone isn't enough. You still need BOS/CHOCH + OB/FVG for entry.
❌ Trading at Equilibrium — The 50% level is no man's land. Avoid entries here — wait for price to pull deeper.
