Supply & Demand with Liquidity Sweeps — Smart Money Tactics
Understand how institutional traders find liquidity, execute sweeps and grabs, and use Supply/Demand zones for manipulation.
What are Supply & Demand Zones?
Supply & Demand zones are areas where large order clusters exist.
- Demand Zone = Below price, many buyers waiting (big buy orders)
- Supply Zone = Above price, many sellers waiting (big sell orders)
Why They Matter?
Institutional traders know where these zones are. They push price there to fill orders and profit.
Understanding Liquidity Sweeps & Grabs
What is a Liquidity Sweep?
A sweep is when price quickly collects stops to fuel momentum.
Example: Bearish Trap (also called a Sweep
Stop Loss Area (all retail traders' SL)
↓ ← 1.0815
|
1.0820 ├─ ← Swing Low
|
1.0810 ├─ ← Stop collection zone (Liquidity Pool)
| ↓ ↓ ↓ (everyone's SL here)
|
1.0805 ├─ Limited support
What Happens:
- Price starts forming (people buy)
- Dips to collect stops
- Then bounces hard upward
What is a Liquidity Grab?
A grab is when price collects liquidity and continues in direction.
Example:
Uptrend
1.0850
|
1.0840 ├─ ← Institutional buyers cluster (Demand Zone)
| ↑ ↑ (huge buy orders)
1.0830 ├─
|
1.0820 ├─ ← Swing High (previous)
| ↑
1.0815 ├─ GRAB - Takes liquidity
|
Then price rallies hard and quickly upward.
Institutional traders grab stops because stops = liquidity. They buy the liquidity cheap, then push price to their targets.
Identifying Liquidity Zones on Charts
Most Common Liquidity Zones:
1. Previous Swing High: Resistance point
2. Previous Swing Low: Support point
3. Round Numbers (1.0800, 1.0850, etc): More stops
4. Daily High/Low: Weekly retest levels
5. Stop Clusters: Many traders' SL at same area
Example 5-Minute Chart (EURUSD):
Time Price Liquidity Zone
--- ------ ----------------
T1 1.0900 Swing High = liquidity above (everyone's SL here)
T2 1.0880
T3 1.0870 ← New uptrend begins
T4 1.0920 ← Liquidity Grab! Swing High broken
T5 1.0915
T6 1.0930 ← Fast momentum (liquidity pulled)
Supply & Demand Interactive Analysis
Supply Zones in Detail
A Supply Zone is historic resistance where massive selling pressure exists.
Supply Zones Form When:
- Price rallies fast then reverses
- Many retail traders bought at the high (now losing money)
- They want to "break even" by selling at that level
- This creates sell pressure at that zone
On the chart above:
- The red line reaches the Supply zone
- All those losing traders try to exit
- Price gets rejected (bounces back down)
- Reason: Sell orders (stop losses) > Buy orders
Professional Application:
When price touches a Supply zone and liquidity is above it, institutions execute stop collection upward before reversing down. This creates a reliable "trap" pattern traders can recognize.
The blue section shows the opposite - Demand zone where price bounces UP because losing sellers are buying back at support levels.
What Happens When Price Reaches Supply:
- All those losing traders sell
- Sell pressure increases → Price stalls
- Or price breaks through (gets squeezed)
Demand Zones in Detail
A Demand Zone is historic support where massive buying pressure exists.
Demand Zones Form When:
- Price crashes fast then bounces
- Many traders shorted at the bottom (now losing)
- They want to "break even" by buying
- This creates buy pressure
Chart Example:
1.0900 ┐
│ Price falls
│
1.0850 ├─ ← Shorted here by many
│ Now losing money
│ = Demand Zone (buy pressure)
1.0800 └─ Lowest point
What Happens When Price Reaches Demand:
- All those losing traders buy
- Buy pressure increases → Price bounces
- Or price breaks below (gets squeezed)
Supply/Demand zones = real people, real emotions, real money flows—not just chart lines.
Complete Trading Scenario
Scene: GBPUSD 1-Hour Chart
Context: Uptrend active, Daily trend is bullish
1.2850 ┐
│ Supply Zone (tested yesterday, bounced)
1.2840 ├─ ← Resistance area
│
1.2820 ├─ Swing High (current)
│
1.2800 ├─ ← Order Block (strong buy)
│ + Demand Zone
1.2780 │
│ Swing Low
1.2770 └─
Events:
T1: Price 1.2795 (Order Block + Demand Zone)
→ Bullish candle, Close: 1.2805
T2: Price 1.2810 (Swing High area)
→ Liquidity zone (everyone's SL here)
T3: Price 1.2825 (Supply Zone broken)
→ GRAB! Liquidity taken
T4: Price 1.2835 and still climbing
→ Squeeze + fast momentum
Trading Plan:
Entry Zone: 1.2790-1.2800 (Demand Zone)
Stop: 1.2770 (Swing Low)
Target 1: 1.2820 (Previous Swing High)
Target 2: 1.2840 (Supply Zone break)
Risk/Reward: 1:2.5
Supply + Demand Combinations
Scenario 1: Supply + Liquidity Swipe
Price heads to Supply Zone
→ Liquidity above (stop area)
→ Price hits and grabs it
→ Then sharp downward momentum
= Likely but not guaranteed
Scenario 2: Demand + Order Block
Price crashes through Demand Zone
→ Then bounces off Order Block
→ Strong upward push
= Very strong for entries
Scenario 3: Round Number Noise
1.0800 (Round) = Liquidity + Supply/Demand mixed
Price oscillates
→ Sometimes grab, sometimes sweep
→ Whipsaws likely
= Avoid or use tight stops
