The Complete Trading Journal Template: Track, Analyze, Improve
Master the trading journal. Learn what to track, how to analyze your mistakes, and how to improve your trading weekly. Includes a free template.
Why 90% of Traders Fail
Here's the hard truth: Most traders don't know why they're losing money.
They'll say: "The market was rigged" or "My strategy doesn't work" — but they have NO DATA to prove it.
They don't track their trades. They don't know their actual win rate. They don't analyze their mistakes. They just... trade and hope.
The professionals? They journal every single trade.
A trading journal is the difference between:
- Guessing at what went wrong
- Knowing exactly what went wrong and how to fix it

How to Analyze Your Journal (Weekly Review)
Every Friday evening, spend 30 minutes reviewing your journal:
1. Calculate Your Stats
Total Trades This Week: 15
Wins: 9
Losses: 6
Win Rate: 60% ✅
Total $ Profit: $450
Total $ Loss: $-200
Net P&L: $250 ✅
Average Risk per Trade: $50
Average Reward per Trade: $75
Profit Factor: $450 / $200 = 2.25 (Good)
2. Identify Patterns
Look for:
- Which pairs were profitable? (EUR/USD +$200, GBP/USD -$50)
- Which setups worked? (Breakouts 65% win rate, S/R zones 55%)
- Which timeframes? (4H better than 1H)
- Time of day? (London session stronger)
3. List Your Mistakes
Week of May 6:
❌ Moved stop loss 2 times (Trades 3, 7) — cost me $80
❌ Traded too large position on Trade 12 (risked 2% instead of 1%)
❌ Didn't wait for confirmation on Trade 9 (FOMO trade)
❌ Held winner too long on Trade 14 (should have taken 50% at TP)
4. Write Your Action Plan
THIS WEEK I WILL:
1. Never move a stop loss (trade is invalid if I move it)
2. Stick to 1% risk on EVERY trade (use checklist before entry)
3. Only trade EUR/USD and GBP/USD (avoid underperforming pairs)
4. Only trade breakouts (they have higher win rate)
5. Take 50% profit at first target, let 50% run (fix greedy exits)
Monthly Deep Dive (End of Month Review)
At month end, do a deeper analysis:
Performance Summary
MONTH: May 2026
────────────────────
Total Trades: 60
Win Rate: 58%
Profit Factor: 2.1
Total Net P&L: $1,200
Daily Average: $40
Monthly Return %: 12% (on $10K account) ✅
Best Day: May 15 (+$150)
Worst Day: May 8 (-$200)
Max Consecutive Losses: 4
Max Consecutive Wins: 6

Common Journal Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Mistake #1: Not Recording Trades
"I'll remember this one..."
No you won't. After 50 trades, details blur. Write it down immediately after exit.
❌ Mistake #2: Only Recording Wins
Only noting winning trades gives a false sense of your actual edge. Track losses honestly.
❌ Mistake #3: Vague Analysis
"Market went up, I made money." — This teaches you nothing.
Be specific: "Broke above daily resistance at 1.0900 with bullish engulfing; held to daily TP at 1.0950; profit $75."
❌ Mistake #4: Never Reading Your Journal
You journal 60 trades then never review. Pointless.
Rule: Weekly review mandatory. Monthly deep dive mandatory.
❌ Mistake #5: Getting Too Complex
Don't track 50 data points per trade. Start with 15. Add more as you evolve.
The Real Power of Journaling
After 3 months of consistent journaling, you'll have irrefutable data about:
- Your actual edge — "My breakout strategy is 62% win rate on EUR/USD"
- Your weak points — "I lose money when I move stops" or "Falling FOMO costs $100/week"
- Your profitable periods — "I'm profitable only during London session"
- Your best instruments — "Forex beats crypto for me"
This data makes you unstoppable because now you're trading based on YOUR statistics, not ego.
