Supply & Demand Zones
Master institutional supply and demand zones. Learn the difference between retail S&R and institutional supply/demand, zone identification rules, and trading strategies.
Supply and demand zones are the FOUNDATION that Order Blocks are built upon. Understanding institutional S&D gives you a deeper understanding of WHY order blocks work and how to identify the strongest ones.
Key Principles
Institutional Supply Zone
- Area where institutional SELLING overwhelmed buying
- Price fell aggressively FROM this zone
- Unfilled sell orders remain = price returns to fill them
- Acts as resistance with institutional backing
Institutional Demand Zone
- Area where institutional BUYING overwhelmed selling
- Price rose aggressively FROM this zone
- Unfilled buy orders remain = price returns to fill them
- Acts as support with institutional backing
Zone Quality Criteria
| Criteria | Strong Zone | Weak Zone |
|---|---|---|
| Departure speed | Fast (displacement) | Slow (grinding) |
| Time at level | Brief (1-3 candles) | Extended (many candles) |
| Freshness | Never tested | Tested multiple times |
| Volume | Low volume in zone | High volume |
| Return speed | Slow approach | Fast V-shape |
Practical Application
Identifying Zones
- Find a strong impulsive move (displacement)
- Mark the base/consolidation BEFORE the move
- Zone = the consolidation area before displacement
- Proximal line = nearest edge to current price
- Distal line = far edge of the zone
Trading Zones
- Wait for price to return to the zone
- Look for rejection/confirmation at the zone
- Enter with stop beyond the distal line
- Target = next opposing zone or liquidity level
Combining with ICT/SMC
- S&D zone + Order Block inside = high probability
- S&D zone + FVG at zone boundary = precision entry
- S&D zone + Liquidity sweep before entry = A+ setup
A zone is INVALIDATED when price closes through the distal line with displacement. Tested zones lose strength with each touch. After 3 tests, consider the zone consumed. Always use fresh zones for highest probability.
