Multi-Timeframe Analysis — Complete Professional Guide
Master Multi-Timeframe Analysis (MTF) to align your trades with institutional order flow. The key skill that separates professionals from amateurs.
Why Multi-Timeframe Analysis is Non-Negotiable
The #1 mistake retail traders make is trading on a single timeframe. They see a setup on 15M and take it — without checking if the 4H or Daily agrees. This is like driving while only looking through a telescope: you see detail but miss the big picture.
Multi-Timeframe Analysis (MTF) means analyzing price across multiple timeframes to ensure your trade aligns with the larger market structure.
Institutional traders ALWAYS start with higher timeframes and work down. They determine direction on Weekly/Daily, find setups on 4H/1H, and execute on 15M/5M. This top-down approach is what gives them their edge.
The Three-Timeframe Framework
Every trade should use exactly 3 timeframes:
| Role | Timeframes | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| HTF (Higher) | Daily / Weekly | Direction & Bias |
| MTF (Middle) | 4H / 1H | Setup & Structure |
| LTF (Lower) | 15M / 5M | Entry & Execution |
Timeframe Combinations:
| Trading Style | HTF | MTF | LTF |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swing Trading | Weekly | Daily | 4H |
| Intraday (Standard) | Daily | 4H | 15M |
| Intraday (Scalp) | 4H | 1H | 5M |
| ICT Model | Daily | 4H/1H | 15M/5M |
Step 1: HTF — Determine Direction
The Higher Timeframe tells you ONE thing: which direction to trade.
What to Analyze on HTF:
- Market Structure — Is it making HH/HL (bullish) or LH/LL (bearish)?
- Key Levels — Where are the major swing highs/lows?
- Liquidity Pools — Where are equal highs/lows and obvious stops?
- Premium/Discount — Is price in a zone where your bias makes sense?
HTF Decision Framework:
Daily Structure = Bullish (HH/HL)
→ Only look for BUYS
→ Even if LTF shows bearish setup, IGNORE IT
Daily Structure = Bearish (LH/LL)
→ Only look for SELLS
→ Even if LTF shows bullish setup, IGNORE IT
Daily Structure = Ranging
→ Trade the range extremes
→ Buy at range bottom, sell at range top
NEVER trade against the HTF direction. If Daily is bullish, you are ONLY a buyer, regardless of what lower timeframes show. This single rule eliminates 50%+ of losing trades.
Step 2: MTF — Find the Setup
The Middle Timeframe is where you find your specific trading setup.
What to Analyze on MTF:
- BOS / CHOCH — Structural confirmations
- Order Blocks — Mark the OBs that caused the structure breaks
- Fair Value Gaps — Note any unfilled FVGs
- Premium/Discount — Is the setup in the correct zone?
- Liquidity — What liquidity was or will be taken?
The MTF Setup Checklist:
□ HTF says BULLISH
□ MTF shows BOS (trend continuation confirmed)
□ OB identified from the BOS move
□ OB is in Discount (below 50% of MTF dealing range)
□ Unmitigated FVG overlaps with OB (bonus confluence)
□ Liquidity below the OB (stops to be swept before reaction)
Step 3: LTF — Execute the Trade
The Lower Timeframe is ONLY for timing your entry precisely.
What to Do on LTF:
- Wait for price to reach your MTF POI (OB, FVG, or Breaker)
- Watch for LTF confirmation:
- Bullish CHOCH (for buy setups)
- Bearish CHOCH (for sell setups)
- Displacement candle showing aggression
- Enter at the LTF OB created during the CHOCH
- Set stop loss below the LTF swing low (for buys) or above swing high (for sells)
- Set target at the MTF/HTF liquidity target
Why LTF Entry Matters:
Without LTF refinement:
- Entry at MTF OB: Stop = 40 pips, Target = 120 pips → 3R
With LTF refinement:
- Entry at LTF OB within MTF OB: Stop = 12 pips, Target = 120 pips → 10R
Same trade, same target, but 3x better R:R through LTF refinement.
Complete MTF Trade Example
EUR/USD Buy Setup
Step 1 — Daily (HTF): Direction
- Daily structure: HH/HL — Bullish ✓
- Price is in Daily Discount (pulled back to 50% fib of last Daily leg) ✓
- Liquidity target: Equal highs at 1.0950 (BSL)
Step 2 — 4H (MTF): Setup
- 4H BOS confirmed (broke above previous 4H swing high) ✓
- Bullish OB at 1.0830-1.0845 (last red candle before BOS) ✓
- OB is in 4H Discount (below 50% of 4H dealing range) ✓
- FVG at 1.0835-1.0848 overlaps with OB ✓
- SSL below at 1.0820 (previous swing low)
Step 3 — 15M (LTF): Entry
- Price drops to 4H OB zone (reaches 1.0838)
- SSL at 1.0820 gets swept (liquidity taken ✓)
- 15M CHOCH confirmed — first higher high after the sweep
- 15M Bullish OB at 1.0825-1.0832 (created during CHOCH)
- Entry: 1.0828
- Stop: 1.0815 (13 pips — below the 15M swing low)
- Target: 1.0950 (122 pips — Daily BSL target)
- R:R = 1:9.4 🔥
Result: Price rallied to 1.0950 over 2 days → +122 pips, 9.4R ✅
MTF Alignment Scoring
Rate your setup alignment before entering:
| Factor | Points |
|---|---|
| HTF direction matches | +2 |
| MTF BOS/CHOCH confirmed | +2 |
| Entry POI in correct P&D zone | +2 |
| LTF confirmation at POI | +2 |
| Kill Zone timing | +1 |
| FVG + OB overlap | +1 |
| Liquidity swept before entry | +1 |
| Total possible | 11 |
Scoring:
- 9-11 points: A+ setup — Full size position
- 7-8 points: B setup — Half size
- 5-6 points: C setup — Skip or quarter size
- Below 5: No trade — Wait for better
Common MTF Mistakes
❌ Trading LTF setups against HTF — A 5M bullish CHOCH means nothing if Daily is bearish. Always respect HTF.
❌ Using too many timeframes — Stick to exactly 3. More = analysis paralysis.
❌ Entering on MTF without LTF refinement — You're leaving R:R on the table. Always refine.
❌ Switching timeframes mid-trade — Once entered, manage on your entry TF. Don't zoom out and panic.
❌ Looking for perfection — Not all 3 TFs will perfectly align every day. If HTF + MTF agree and LTF gives a clean entry, that's enough.
The MTF Routine (Bangladesh Time)
Daily Routine for Intraday Traders:
| Time (BD) | Action | Timeframe |
|---|---|---|
| 6:00 PM | Review Daily & 4H charts, determine bias | HTF + MTF |
| 6:30 PM | Mark POIs, OBs, FVGs on 4H/1H | MTF |
| 7:00 PM | NY Kill Zone opens — watch 15M for entry | LTF |
| 7:00-10:00 PM | Execute if LTF confirms at MTF POI | LTF |
| 10:00 PM | If no entry, stop. Journal observations | — |
Key Takeaways
| Principle | Details |
|---|---|
| Always top-down | HTF → MTF → LTF. Never bottom-up. |
| HTF = Direction | Only trade in HTF direction |
| MTF = Setup | Find OB, FVG, structure here |
| LTF = Entry | Refine timing, get tight stops |
| 3 Timeframes max | More = confusion |
| LTF refinement | 3-10x better R:R than MTF entries |
