Multi-Timeframe Analysis — Complete Guide
Master multi-timeframe analysis. Learn the top-down approach, timeframe correlation, and how to align HTF bias with LTF entries.
What is Multi-Timeframe Analysis?
Multi-Timeframe Analysis (MTA) is the practice of analyzing the same instrument across multiple timeframes to get a complete picture. The higher timeframe gives you the direction (bias), and the lower timeframe gives you the entry (precision).
Professional traders NEVER trade from a single timeframe. They always start from the highest relevant timeframe for direction, then drill down for entry. This single habit separates profitable traders from struggling ones.
The Three-Timeframe Framework
| Role | Timeframe Examples | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| HTF (Bias) | Weekly / Daily | Overall trend direction |
| MTF (Structure) | 4H / 1H | Setup identification, key levels |
| LTF (Entry) | 15M / 5M | Precise entry and stop placement |
Common Timeframe Combinations:
| Trading Style | HTF | MTF | LTF |
|---|---|---|---|
| Position | Monthly | Weekly | Daily |
| Swing | Weekly | Daily | 4H |
| Day Trade | Daily | 4H/1H | 15M/5M |
| Scalp | 4H | 1H | 5M/1M |
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: HTF — Determine the Bias
- Is the market in an uptrend, downtrend, or range?
- Where are the major S/R levels?
- Is price in premium or discount?
Step 2: MTF — Identify the Setup
- Where is the nearest key level within the HTF structure?
- Is there a pullback to a key zone?
- Is internal structure aligning with the HTF bias?
Step 3: LTF — Execute the Entry
- Wait for a CHOCH or BOS in the direction of the HTF bias
- Identify the order block or FVG for precise entry
- Place your stop and target
Real Trading Examples
Example 1: EUR/USD Day Trade
- Daily (HTF): Uptrend, HH/HL structure. Price pulling back toward HL
- 4H (MTF): Price at 1.0880 — a 4H demand zone inside the Daily HL area
- 15M (LTF): Internal CHOCH above 1.0888. 15M bullish OB at 1.0882
- Entry: Buy 1.0883 | Stop: 1.0868 | Target: 1.0945
- R:R: 4.1:1 | Result: +62 pips ✅
Example 2: Gold Swing Trade
- Weekly: Clear uptrend. Price in discount zone near $2,350
- Daily: Bullish engulfing candle at $2,355 demand zone
- 4H: CHOCH bullish, OB at $2,360
- Entry: $2,362 | Stop: $2,340 | Target: $2,430
- R:R: 3.1:1 | Result: +$68 ✅
Example 3: NAS100 Scalp (BD Time)
- 4H (HTF): Bullish structure since London session
- 1H (MTF): Price pulling back to 1H demand at 18,280
- 5M (LTF): At 9:00 PM BD, 5M CHOCH bullish at 18,285
- Entry: 18,288 | Stop: 18,270 | Target: 18,330
- Result: +42 points, 2.3R ✅
Common Mistakes
❌ Trading against the HTF — If Daily is bearish, don't take 15M longs. You're fighting the bigger force.
❌ Too many timeframes — 3 timeframes maximum. More creates confusion and conflicting signals.
❌ Not starting from HTF — Always begin analysis from the highest timeframe. Never start from LTF.
❌ LTF noise overriding HTF — A 5M signal doesn't override a Daily structure break. HTF always wins.
Summary
| Concept | Details |
|---|---|
| HTF | Direction and bias (Weekly/Daily) |
| MTF | Setup identification (4H/1H) |
| LTF | Entry precision (15M/5M) |
| Rule | ALWAYS trade in HTF direction |
| Framework | Bias → Setup → Entry (top-down) |
