Absorption & Exhaustion Patterns — Complete Guide
Master absorption and exhaustion patterns in order flow. Learn how to identify when institutions are absorbing aggressive orders and when momentum is exhausting for precision reversals.
Absorption vs Exhaustion
These are the two most powerful order flow patterns that reveal institutional activity:
- Absorption: When a large passive order "absorbs" aggressive orders without price moving — hidden institutional strength
- Exhaustion: When aggressive orders are depleting without creating further movement — the aggressor is running out of ammunition
The Key Difference
Absorption = Strong hands absorbing weak hands. Price HELD because institutions WANT to defend that level. Exhaustion = Aggressive traders running out of energy. Price STALLS because no one is left to push it further. Both signal reversals, but for different reasons.
Absorption Patterns
What Absorption Looks Like
Time Price Bid Volume Ask Volume Delta Price Change
──── ───── ────────── ────────── ───── ────────────
10:01 1.0950 500 50 -450 0
10:02 1.0950 480 40 -440 0
10:03 1.0950 450 35 -415 0
10:04 1.0950 300 30 -270 0 ← Selling slowing
10:05 1.0951 50 200 +150 +1 ← BREAKOUT
Large negative delta (heavy selling) BUT price doesn't drop.
= Massive institutional limit buy ABSORBING all selling pressure.
= When sellers exhaust → explosive move UP.
Absorption Rules
- High volume at a price level
- Negative/positive delta (one side aggressive)
- Price DOES NOT MOVE in the direction of aggression
- Duration: Minimum 3-5 prints of absorption
- Resolution: When the aggressor stops → price moves AWAY from them
Types of Absorption
| Type | Description | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| Bid absorption | Large limit buys absorbing market sells | Bullish |
| Ask absorption | Large limit sells absorbing market buys | Bearish |
| Double absorption | Both sides absorbing at different levels | Range-bound |
Exhaustion Patterns
What Exhaustion Looks Like
Time Price Volume Delta Candle
──── ───── ────── ───── ──────
10:01 1.0950 800 +600 Large green
10:02 1.0960 600 +400 Medium green
10:03 1.0965 300 +150 Small green ← Volume declining
10:04 1.0967 100 +30 Doji ← Almost no energy left
10:05 1.0965 400 -300 Red ← Reversal begins
Volume and delta DECLINING as price pushes higher.
= Buyers are exhausting — no fresh demand entering.
= Reversal imminent.
Exhaustion Rules
- Declining volume on each push in the trend direction
- Declining delta magnitude with each candle
- Price making new highs/lows but with less conviction
- Wicks appearing at extremes (failed attempts)
- Resolution: Aggressive counter-move when exhaustion completes
Exhaustion at Key Levels
Most powerful when exhaustion occurs at:
- Volume Profile VAH/VAL boundaries
- Order Block zones
- Liquidity pool locations (EQH/EQL)
- VWAP standard deviation bands
Trading Absorption
Entry Strategy
- Identify key level (OB, demand zone, VP POC)
- Watch for absorption — high delta against the level, price holds
- Wait for resolution — aggressor exhausts, price starts moving away
- Enter on first displacement candle after absorption
- Stop loss below the absorption zone
Example: Bullish Absorption Trade
Setup: Price at daily bullish OB (1.0950)
Footprint shows: 500+ lots hitting bid, price holding 1.0950
Duration: 5 minutes of absorption
Resolution: Green engulfing candle breaks above 1.0960
Entry: 1.0962 (above resolution candle)
Stop: 1.0945 (below absorption zone)
Target: Next liquidity pool (EQH at 1.1020)
Trading Exhaustion
Entry Strategy
- Identify extended move — price far from VWAP/POC
- Watch for declining delta — momentum fading
- Confirm with volume — each candle has less volume
- Wait for reversal candle — first aggressive candle against trend
- Enter on the reversal with stop beyond the exhaustion extreme
Absorption + Exhaustion Combined
The most powerful setup:
1. Price rallies with DECLINING delta (exhaustion of buyers)
2. Price reaches key resistance (OB, EQH)
3. At resistance: HIGH volume but price stops (absorption by sellers)
4. Result: DOUBLE confirmation of reversal
5. Enter short when first displacement candle breaks structure
Common Mistakes
- Confusing LOW VOLUME with absorption (absorption requires HIGH volume)
- Trading exhaustion too early (wait for actual reversal candle)
- Not combining with structure (absorption at random levels is meaningless)
- Over-trading absorption in ranging markets
