Economic Calendar Guide
Master the economic calendar for trading. Learn how to read economic events, understand their market impact, and plan your trades around high-impact news releases.
What is the Economic Calendar?
The economic calendar is a schedule of macroeconomic data releases and events that affect financial markets. Professional traders check the calendar daily to know when volatility-causing events are coming and plan their trading accordingly.
Never be surprised by a news release. Check the economic calendar EVERY morning before your trading session. If you do not know what news is coming, you should not be trading.
Impact Levels
Economic events are categorized by their expected impact on the market:
| Impact | Color Code | Effect | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🔴 High | Red | Major price movements (50-200+ pips) | Avoid trading 15 min before/after OR trade the reaction |
| 🟡 Medium | Yellow/Orange | Moderate moves (20-50 pips) | Be aware, reduce size if needed |
| ⚪ Low | Gray/White | Minimal impact (under 10 pips) | Usually safe to ignore |

How to Read Economic Data
The Three Numbers That Matter
For every economic release, you need to know:
- Previous — Last month/quarter's actual number
- Forecast (Consensus) — What economists expect
- Actual — The real number when released
How Markets React
| Scenario | Market Reaction |
|---|---|
| Actual is MUCH better than forecast | Strong bullish for that currency |
| Actual is slightly better | Mild bullish, may fade |
| Actual matches forecast | Minimal reaction (already priced in) |
| Actual is slightly worse | Mild bearish, may fade |
| Actual is MUCH worse than forecast | Strong bearish for that currency |
Key insight: Markets move based on the surprise factor — how much the actual differs from the forecast — not the absolute number.
Key Economic Indicators Explained
Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP)
- What: Number of jobs added/lost in the US economy (excluding farms)
- When: First Friday of every month, 8:30 PM BD time
- Why it matters: Jobs = consumer spending = economic growth
- Trading tip: Avoid entering new trades 30 minutes before NFP. Wait for the initial spike to settle (15-30 min) before trading the direction
Consumer Price Index (CPI)
- What: Measures inflation — the change in consumer prices
- When: Monthly, 8:30 PM BD time
- Why it matters: Inflation drives central bank decisions on interest rates
- Higher CPI → Expectations of rate hikes → Bullish for currency
- Lower CPI → Expectations of rate cuts → Bearish for currency
Interest Rate Decisions
- What: Central bank sets the benchmark interest rate
- When: Scheduled meetings (FOMC 8x/year, ECB 8x/year)
- Why it matters: Higher rates attract foreign investment → Bullish for currency
- The press conference after the decision often moves markets more than the decision itself
Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
- What: Total value of goods and services produced
- When: Quarterly (advance, preliminary, final)
- Why it matters: Overall measure of economic health
- Rising GDP → Economy growing → Bullish
- Falling GDP → Recession risk → Bearish
PMI (Purchasing Managers Index)
- What: Survey of business conditions
- When: Monthly
- Above 50 = expansion (economy growing)
- Below 50 = contraction (economy shrinking)
- Manufacturing PMI and Services PMI are reported separately
Trading Around News
Strategy 1: Avoid News Entirely
The safest approach for beginners:
- Close all positions 15-30 minutes before high-impact news
- Wait 15-30 minutes after the release before entering new trades
- Spreads widen significantly during news — poor execution
Strategy 2: Straddle (Pre-News)
- Place buy stop above current price and sell stop below
- One order triggers on the news move
- Cancel the other order
- Risk: Whipsaw — price spikes both directions, hitting both stops
Strategy 3: Fade the Spike
- Wait for the initial news reaction (first 5-15 minutes)
- If the move is unsustainable, trade the reversal
- Requires experience and strict risk management
- Only for experienced traders
Strategy 4: Trade the Trend After
- Wait for the full reaction (30-60 minutes post-release)
- Identify the new trend direction established by the data
- Enter on pullback in the new direction
- This is the safest and most reliable news trading strategy

Common Mistakes
❌ Not checking the calendar — Getting caught in a news event unprepared is the fastest way to blow a trade.
❌ Trading through high-impact news — Spreads can widen to 10-20x normal. Stops may not execute at your price.
❌ Only watching one currency — If you trade EUR/USD, check BOTH EUR and USD events.
❌ Ignoring the forecast vs actual — The number itself matters less than the surprise.
❌ Forgetting about speeches — Central bank speeches can move markets just as much as data releases.
❌ Not adjusting for timezone — Always set your calendar to Bangladesh time to avoid confusion.
