Performance Tracking & Analytics — Complete Guide
Master trading performance tracking. Learn key metrics, how to analyze your results, identify strengths and weaknesses, and continuously improve your trading.
Why Track Performance?
Performance tracking transforms trading from gambling into a data-driven profession. Without measuring results, you cannot identify what works, what doesn't, and where to improve.
Professional Standard
Every professional trader, hedge fund, and prop firm tracks performance meticulously. If you're serious about trading, your journal and analytics are as important as your strategy.
Key Performance Metrics
| Metric | Formula | Healthy Range |
|---|---|---|
| Win Rate | Winning trades ÷ Total trades | 40-60% |
| Risk:Reward | Average win ÷ Average loss | 1.5:1 to 3:1 |
| Profit Factor | Gross profit ÷ Gross loss | Above 1.5 |
| Expectancy | (WR × Avg Win) - (LR × Avg Loss) | Positive |
| Max Drawdown | Largest peak-to-trough decline | Below 20% |
| Sharpe Ratio | (Return - Risk-free) ÷ Std deviation | Above 1.0 |
| Recovery Factor | Net profit ÷ Max drawdown | Above 3.0 |
Expectancy Formula
Expectancy = (Win% × Average Win) - (Loss% × Average Loss)
Example:
- Win rate: 55%
- Average win: $150
- Average loss: $100
Expectancy = (0.55 × $150) - (0.45 × $100)
= $82.50 - $45.00
= $37.50 per trade
Over 100 trades: $37.50 × 100 = $3,750 expected profit
