Price Imbalance in SMC — Complete Guide
Master price imbalance — gaps between candles showing institutional aggression and areas price must return to fill.
What is Price Imbalance?
Price imbalance (also called inefficiency) occurs when price moves so aggressively in one direction that it creates gaps between candle wicks — areas where there was no two-sided trading. These gaps represent institutional urgency and price typically returns to fill them.
Imbalance = Magnet
Price is attracted to imbalances like a magnet. Unfilled imbalances act as targets — price will almost always return to fill them before continuing. Use this knowledge for entries and targets.
Types of Imbalance
Fair Value Gap (FVG) — Most Common
- 3-candle pattern where middle candle creates a gap
- Candle 1 high doesn't overlap Candle 3 low (bullish)
- Or Candle 1 low doesn't overlap Candle 3 high (bearish)
Volume Imbalance
- Gap between consecutive candle bodies
- One candle closes and next opens at different price
- Common at session opens
Liquidity Void
- Large single candle with barely any wicks
- Represents one-sided movement
- Price returns to fill the body
Why Price Returns to Imbalance
| Reason | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Unfilled orders | Limit orders sitting in the gap |
| Fair value seeking | Market seeks equilibrium |
| Institutional reentry | Smart money re-enters at better price |
| Efficiency | Markets hate inefficiency |
Trading Imbalance
Entry at FVG Fill:
1. Identify FVG (gap between C1 and C3)
2. Wait for price to return to the FVG zone
3. Enter in the direction of the original impulse
4. Stop: Beyond the FVG (full candle range)
5. Target: Next structural level or liquidity
Example (Bullish FVG):
- Strong bullish move creates FVG at 1.1000-1.1020
- Price returns to 1.1010 (filling the gap)
- Enter long at 1.1010
- Stop: Below 1.0990 (below the FVG)
- Target: Next swing high
Not All Imbalances Fill:
- HTF imbalances in strong trends may not fill for days/weeks
- Counter-trend FVGs in strong trends often DON'T fill
- Use imbalances aligned with HTF trend for highest probability
