SMT Divergence — Complete Guide
Master SMT (Smart Money Technique) Divergence — using correlated pair behavior to confirm institutional direction.
What is SMT Divergence?
SMT (Smart Money Technique) Divergence occurs when correlated pairs show divergent price structure — one makes a new high/low while the other doesn't. This reveals which direction smart money is actually positioned.
How SMT Works
Correlated pairs should move together.
When they diverge, one is showing the TRUE direction.
Example (EUR/USD vs GBP/USD):
- Both typically move in same direction
- EUR/USD makes new low → GBP/USD does NOT make new low
- This divergence = smart money NOT bearish
- Expect bullish reversal
Example (DXY vs EUR/USD):
- DXY and EUR/USD are inversely correlated
- DXY makes new high → EUR/USD does NOT make new low
- Divergence = DXY strength is false
- Expect EUR/USD bullish move
Common SMT Pairs
| Pair 1 | Pair 2 | Correlation |
|---|---|---|
| EUR/USD | GBP/USD | Positive |
| EUR/USD | DXY | Inverse |
| Gold | DXY | Inverse |
| ES (S&P) | NQ (Nasdaq) | Positive |
| US30 | US100 | Positive |
Trading SMT Divergence
1. Monitor correlated pairs on same timeframe
2. Look for structural divergence (new H/L on one, not other)
3. The pair that FAILS to make new extreme = true direction
4. Enter in the direction of the non-confirming pair
5. Use standard SMC entry (OB, FVG, CHOCH)
6. Target: Opposite liquidity
SMT adds CONFLUENCE — don't trade it alone.
Use it as additional confirmation for your SMC setup.
