Introduction to Smart Money Concepts
Complete introduction to Smart Money Concepts (SMC) — learn how institutional traders move markets, the difference between smart money and retail money, and the core SMC framework.
What is Smart Money?
Smart Money refers to institutional traders — banks, hedge funds, pension funds, and market makers — who have the capital, information, and infrastructure to move markets. They represent over 90% of daily trading volume. Smart Money Concepts (SMC) is a framework for understanding HOW these institutions trade.
"Retail traders lose because they trade against institutions. SMC teaches you to identify institutional footprints and trade WITH smart money, not against it."
Smart Money vs Retail Money
| Aspect | Retail Traders | Smart Money |
|---|---|---|
| Volume | 5-10% of market | 90-95% of market |
| Information | Price charts, indicators | Order flow, dark pools |
| Entries | Breakouts, indicator signals | Liquidity sweeps, OBs |
| Stop Placement | Below support/resistance | Creates the stop hunts |
| Timeframe | Minutes to hours | Hours to weeks |
| Goal | Quick profits | Accumulate/distribute positions |
The SMC Framework
Core Concepts
- Market Structure — Understanding trend direction (HH, HL, LH, LL)
- Order Blocks (OB) — Institutional entry zones
- Fair Value Gaps (FVG) — Price imbalances
- Liquidity — Where stops rest (BSL/SSL)
- Break of Structure (BOS) — Trend continuation signal
- Change of Character (CHOCH) — First reversal signal
- Premium & Discount — Zones for selling and buying
The Wyckoff Foundation
SMC is heavily influenced by Richard Wyckoff's methodology:
- Accumulation — Smart money buys at the bottom
- Markup — Price rises as positions are built
- Distribution — Smart money sells at the top
- Markdown — Price falls after distribution
How Markets Really Move
The Institutional Cycle
- Accumulation Phase — Banks build positions silently in a range
- Manipulation Phase — False breakout to trap retail traders and generate liquidity
- Expansion Phase — The true directional move begins
- Distribution Phase — Banks unload positions at premium prices
Why Retail Loses
- Retail buys breakouts → Smart money SELLS into breakout buyers
- Retail places stops at obvious levels → Smart money HUNTS those stops
- Retail uses lagging indicators → Smart money creates the price action indicators lag behind
Key Differences: SMC vs ICT
| Feature | SMC | ICT |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Community-derived from ICT concepts | Michael Huddleston's original |
| Time Focus | Less emphasis on time | Time is critical (Kill Zones) |
| Complexity | Simplified framework | More nuanced, 50+ concepts |
| Accessibility | Easier to learn | Steeper learning curve |
| Core Tools | OB, FVG, Liquidity, BOS/CHOCH | PO3, OTE, IPDA, Macros |

Real Trading Example
EUR/USD — Complete SMC Analysis
- Daily: Bullish structure (Higher Highs, Higher Lows)
- 4H: Price in discount zone, near a bullish Order Block
- 1H: Liquidity sweep below equal lows (SSL taken)
- 15M: CHOCH bullish → BOS confirms
- Entry: Buy at 15M bullish OB within the 4H OB
- Stop: Below the liquidity sweep
- Target: Next BSL above (1:4 R:R)
- Time (BD): London Kill Zone (12:00 PM - 3:00 PM)
Common Mistakes
❌ Trading every Order Block — Not all OBs are valid. Need context (structure, premium/discount)
❌ Ignoring higher timeframes — HTF direction is everything. Don't go against the Daily trend
❌ No patience — Wait for the full setup: sweep → CHOCH → OB/FVG entry
❌ Over-marking charts — Mark only the RELEVANT levels on your trading timeframe
❌ Confusing BOS and CHOCH — BOS = continuation; CHOCH = reversal. Know the difference
Summary
| Concept | Purpose |

| Order Blocks | Find institutional entry zones |
| Fair Value Gaps | Identify price imbalances for entries |
