AMD — Accumulation, Manipulation, Distribution
Master the AMD cycle (Power of 3) — the core price delivery model in ICT. Learn how every trading day and every candle follows the Accumulation → Manipulation → Distribution sequence.
What is AMD?
AMD stands for Accumulation, Manipulation, Distribution — ICT's model for how price is delivered in every timeframe. Also known as Power of 3 (PO3), this is the single most important concept in ICT methodology.
Every candle, every session, every trading day follows the same three-phase cycle.
"If you understand Power of 3, you understand why price does what it does. Every move starts with accumulation, uses manipulation to create liquidity, and ends with distribution." — ICT
The Three Phases
Phase 1: Accumulation
- Smart money builds positions during low-volatility consolidation
- Typically occurs during Asian session (6:00 AM - 12:00 PM BD)
- Price creates a tight range with clear highs and lows
- Retail traders see "nothing happening" — institutions are loading
- Creates the SSL and BSL that will be targeted
Phase 2: Manipulation (Judas Swing)
- False move that traps retail traders on the wrong side
- Sweeps liquidity on ONE side of the accumulation range
- Happens at London Open (12:00 PM - 3:00 PM BD) typically
- Retail breakout traders enter → get stopped out
- This provides counterparty liquidity for institutional entries
Phase 3: Distribution
- The TRUE directional move of the session/day
- Price moves aggressively in the opposite direction of manipulation
- Targets the liquidity on the OTHER side of the range
- Usually occurs during NY session (5:00 PM - 10:00 PM BD)
- Largest range expansion of the day
AMD on Different Timeframes
Daily Candle AMD
For a bullish day:
- Open → price moves DOWN first (manipulation — Judas Swing)
- Low of Day formed during London open
- Rally through the day (distribution)
- Close near the high
For a bearish day:
- Open → price moves UP first (manipulation)
- High of Day formed during London open
- Sell-off through the day (distribution)
- Close near the low
Session AMD
- Asian Session = Accumulation (range forming)
- London Session = Manipulation (false breakout of Asian range)
- New York Session = Distribution (true move)
Weekly AMD
- Monday = Accumulation (weekly range begins)
- Tuesday = Manipulation (weekly Judas Swing)
- Wednesday-Thursday = Distribution (weekly expansion)
- Friday = Profit-taking / reversal risk
How to Trade AMD
Step 1: Identify Accumulation
- Mark the Asian session range (high and low)
- Note equal highs/lows within the range
- This is your "launch pad"
Step 2: Wait for Manipulation
- London open sweeps one side of the range
- Look for liquidity grab (wick beyond range)
- Wait for MSS on 5M/15M confirming the false move
Step 3: Enter on Distribution
- After MSS confirms, enter at OB/FVG
- Target: opposing side's liquidity
- Stop: beyond the manipulation extreme

- Stop Loss: 1.0858 (below manipulation low)
- Target: BSL above 1.0920
- R:R: 1:3.4
- Distribution: Price rallies through NY to close at 1.0925

PO3 Candle Analysis
Every candle has an open, high, low, and close that reveals the PO3:
Bullish PO3 Candle
Close ←── Distribution (top)
|
| Body = Distribution range
|
Open ←── Accumulation point
|
Low ←── Manipulation (wick down)
Bearish PO3 Candle
High ←── Manipulation (wick up)
|
Open ←── Accumulation point
|
| Body = Distribution range
|
Close ←── Distribution (bottom)
Using Daily PO3 for Bias
- If today's Daily candle opens and goes DOWN first → expect bullish day
- If today's Daily candle opens and goes UP first → expect bearish day
- Check previous Daily candle's PO3 pattern for continuation clues
Common Mistakes
❌ Trading the manipulation — Don't buy the breakout. The manipulation is the TRAP.
❌ No patience for accumulation — If there's no clear range, there's no AMD setup yet.
❌ Entering before MSS — Wait for structure shift confirmation after the sweep.
❌ Ignoring session timing — AMD works because of session transitions. Time is critical.
❌ Fighting the distribution — Once distribution begins, don't counter-trade it.
Summary
| Phase | When (BD Time) | What Happens | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accumulation | Asian (6 AM - 12 PM) | Range forms, positions built | Mark the range |
| Manipulation | London (12 PM - 3 PM) | False breakout, liquidity sweep | Wait + confirm MSS |
| Distribution | NY (5 PM - 10 PM) | True directional move | Enter + ride the move |
