Judas Swing — Complete Guide
Master the ICT Judas Swing concept. Learn how to identify the false initial move that traps retail traders before the real institutional move begins.
What is a Judas Swing?
The Judas Swing is the false initial move at the start of a trading session that goes in the opposite direction of the true daily move. Named after the biblical betrayal, this move "betrays" traders who follow it, trapping them on the wrong side.
It's the Manipulation phase of Power of 3 — the deceptive move that sweeps liquidity before the real institutional move begins.
Just as Judas betrayed with a kiss (appearing friendly), the Judas Swing appears to be a genuine breakout but is actually a trap. The initial direction is a lie — the true move comes after.
How the Judas Swing Works
On a Bullish Day:
- Session opens (London or NY)
- Price initially drops (Judas Swing DOWN)
- This move sweeps sell-side liquidity below the Asian range
- Retail traders see "bearish momentum" and sell
- Price reverses aggressively upward (true move)
- Retail shorts get stopped out, fueling the rally
- Price targets buy-side liquidity above
On a Bearish Day:
- Session opens
- Price initially rallies (Judas Swing UP)
- This sweeps buy-side liquidity above the Asian range
- Retail traders buy the "bullish breakout"
- Price reverses aggressively downward (true move)
- Retail longs get stopped out, fueling the drop
- Price targets sell-side liquidity below
Identifying the Judas Swing
Key Characteristics:
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Timing | First 30-90 minutes of London or NY session |
| Direction | Opposite to the true daily move |
| Target | Takes out Asian range high OR low |
| Structure | Creates a false BOS then reverses |
| Confirmation | MSS/CHOCH after the sweep |
Bangladesh Time Schedule:
| Session | Judas Swing Window (BD Time) |
|---|---|
| London Judas | 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM |
| NY Judas | 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM |
Trading the Judas Swing
Step-by-Step:
- Determine daily bias (bullish or bearish) using HTF analysis
- Mark the Asian range (12AM - 9AM BD time)
- Wait for London/NY open — watch for the initial move
- If bias is bullish → expect a down move first (Judas Swing)
- Let the Judas Swing sweep the Asian low (take SSL)
- Wait for MSS/CHOCH confirming the reversal
- Enter at the OB or FVG created during the reversal
- Stop: Below the Judas Swing low
- Target: Asian high and beyond (BSL above)
Real Trading Examples
Example 1: EUR/USD London Judas
- Bias: Bullish (Daily demand at current levels)
- Asian range (12AM-9AM BD): 1.0880 - 1.0900
- London opens (2:00 PM BD): Price immediately drops
- Judas Swing: Drops below 1.0880 to 1.0868 (sweeps Asian low)
- MSS: At 2:45 PM BD, 5M shows bullish CHOCH with displacement
- Entry: 1.0875 (OB from the CHOCH)
- Stop: 1.0862 (below Judas low)
- Target: 1.0930 (BSL above previous highs)
- Result: +55 pips, 4.2R
Example 2: Gold NY Judas
- Bias: Bearish (4H at premium, weekly supply above)
- Heading into NY: Price ranging around $2,400
- NY opens (7:30 PM BD): Gold pushes up to $2,412
- Judas Swing UP sweeps the intraday highs
- MSS: 15M bearish CHOCH at 8:15 PM BD
- Entry: $2,408 | Stop: $2,415 | Target: $2,375
- Result: +33 points, 4.7R
Common Mistakes
❌ Chasing the Judas move — The initial breakout is the TRAP. Don't enter in the Judas direction.
❌ No daily bias — Without bias, every breakout looks real. Determine direction BEFORE the session.
❌ Trading during Asian session — The Judas Swing occurs during London/NY, not Asian. Asian = accumulation.
❌ Entering before MSS — Wait for structural confirmation after the sweep. Don't guess the reversal.
