ICT Optimal Trade Entry (OTE)
Master the ICT Optimal Trade Entry — the 62-79% Fibonacci retracement zone where institutions enter positions. Learn OTE setup, execution, and examples.
What is OTE?
The Optimal Trade Entry (OTE) is a retracement zone between the 62% and 79% Fibonacci levels of an expansion leg. ICT teaches that after a displacement move, price will retrace into this zone before continuing — this is where institutions add to their positions.
The OTE zone represents the "sweet spot" where risk is lowest and reward is highest. The 70.5% level (midpoint of 62-79%) is considered the ideal entry point.
How to Draw OTE
For Bullish OTE
- Identify the swing low (start of expansion)
- Identify the swing high (end of expansion / displacement high)
- Draw Fibonacci from swing LOW to swing HIGH
- OTE zone = 62% to 79% retracement
- Wait for price to retrace INTO this zone
For Bearish OTE
- Identify the swing high (start of expansion)
- Identify the swing low (end of expansion / displacement low)
- Draw Fibonacci from swing HIGH to swing LOW
- OTE zone = 62% to 79% retracement
- Wait for price to retrace INTO this zone
Key Fibonacci Levels
| Level | Significance |
|---|---|
| 62% | OTE zone begins |
| 70.5% | Optimal entry (midpoint) |
| 79% | OTE zone ends — last chance entry |
| 100% | Full retracement — setup invalid |
OTE + PD Array Confluence
The highest probability entries occur when OTE aligns with a PD Array:
OTE + FVG
- Price retraces into OTE zone AND hits an FVG = highest probability
- The CE of the FVG within OTE = sniper entry
OTE + Order Block
- An OB sitting within the OTE zone = institutional confluence
- Enter at the OB within OTE for the best risk:reward
OTE + Breaker Block
- Failed OB that now acts as support/resistance in OTE zone
- Strong reversal point
Real Trading Examples
Example 1: EUR/USD Bullish OTE
- Expansion: Price rallies from 1.0820 (swing low) to 1.0880 (swing high)
- OTE Zone: 1.0843 (62%) to 1.0833 (79%)
- Sweet Spot: 1.0838 (70.5%)
- What happened: Price retraces to 1.0836, hits a 15M bullish OB
- Entry: Buy at 1.0836
- Stop: 1.0818 (below swing low)
- Target: 1.0920 (BSL above)
- R:R: 1:4.7
- Time (BD): Setup at 6:15 PM (NY AM Kill Zone)
Example 2: Gold Bearish OTE
- Expansion: Price drops from 2,048 to 2,020
- OTE Zone: 2,037 (62%) to 2,042 (79%)
- Sweet Spot: 2,040 (70.5%)
- Confluence: Bearish FVG sits at 2,038 - 2,042
- Entry: Sell at 2,040 (OTE + FVG CE)
- Stop: 2,049
- Target: 2,005
- R:R: 1:3.9
OTE Rules
- Only after displacement — OTE works after a strong impulsive move
- Must have MSS/CHOCH — Structure must confirm direction before looking for OTE
- Kill Zone timing — OTE retracements during Kill Zones are highest probability
- HTF alignment — OTE must agree with Daily/4H bias
- One chance — If price blows through the 79% level, the setup is invalid
Common Mistakes
❌ Using OTE without displacement — No strong move = no valid OTE zone
❌ Entering at 50% — The 50% level is NOT OTE. Wait for 62-79%
❌ No PD Array confluence — OTE alone is a zone, not an exact entry. Need OB/FVG within it
❌ Ignoring invalidation — If price closes beyond 100%, the OTE is dead
❌ Wrong swing points — Use the correct expansion leg, not random highs/lows
Summary
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Zone | 62% - 79% Fibonacci retracement |
| Sweet Spot | 70.5% level |
| Best With | FVG, OB, or Breaker Block confluence |
| Requirement | Displacement + MSS/CHOCH first |
| Invalidation | Price closes beyond 100% retracement |
