Breakouts — Complete Guide
Master breakout trading. Learn to identify true breakouts vs fakeouts, breakout entry techniques, and confirmation strategies.
What is a Breakout?
A breakout occurs when price moves decisively beyond a defined level — support, resistance, trendline, or pattern boundary — signaling the start of a new directional move. Breakouts represent moments when the balance of power shifts between buyers and sellers.
Breakouts are where the biggest moves begin. When price consolidates, energy builds like a compressed spring. The breakout releases that energy into a strong directional impulse. Learning to distinguish real breakouts from traps is one of the most valuable skills in trading.
Types of Breakouts
1. Horizontal Breakout
Price breaks above resistance or below support after consolidation:
───── Resistance ($150.00) ─────
╱╲ ╱╲ ╱╲ ╱╲ ╱╲
╱ ╲╱ ╲╱ ╲╱ ╲╱ ╲╱──── BREAKOUT! →
╱ ╲╱ ╲╱ ╲╱
───── Support ($148.50) ────────
Most common type. Look for at least 3 touches of the level before breakout.
2. Trendline Breakout
Price breaks a diagonal trendline connecting swing highs or lows:
╲ Descending Trendline
╲ LH
╲ ╱ ╲
╲ ╲ LH
╲ ╱ ╲╱╲
╲╱ ╲ ╲ ← BREAKOUT above trendline
LL ╲ ╱
╲╱ HL (higher low = structure shift)
3. Pattern Breakout
Price breaks out of chart patterns:
- Triangle (ascending, descending, symmetrical)
- Wedge (rising, falling)
- Flag / Pennant (continuation patterns)
- Rectangle (range breakout)
4. Structural Breakout (BOS)
Price breaks a previous swing high or low in the direction of the trend:
- Bullish BOS: Price closes above previous swing high
- Bearish BOS: Price closes below previous swing low
True Breakout vs. False Breakout (Fakeout)
True Breakout Characteristics ✅
- Strong momentum candle — Large body, small wicks
- Body closes beyond the level — Not just a wick poke
- Increased volume/momentum — Displacement candle
- Follow-through — Next candle continues in breakout direction
- Clean retest — Price comes back to the level and holds
False Breakout (Fakeout) Characteristics ❌
- Long wick, small body — Price poked through but got rejected
- Quick reversal — Price immediately snaps back inside the range
- No follow-through — Next candles don't continue
- Wick-only break — Body never closes beyond the level
- Low momentum — No displacement, no aggressive candles

Long wick
= rejection
Many breakouts are engineered by institutions to trap retail traders. They push price beyond a level to trigger breakout orders, collect stops, and then reverse. This is why CONFIRMATION is essential — never enter on the initial break alone.
Breakout Confirmation Methods
Method 1: Candle Close Confirmation
Wait for a full candle close beyond the level. A wick poke is not enough.
- 4H candle close = more reliable than 15M
- Daily candle close = highest confidence
Method 2: Retest Entry (Most Reliable)
Wait for price to:
- Break the level
- Pull back to retest the level (old resistance → new support)
- Show rejection at the retested level
- Enter on the rejection
Retest Breakout Entry:
╱ Entry after
╱ rejection at
╱────────────╱ retested level
╱ Retest ╱
──────────╱────────────╱──── (Old Resistance = New Support)
╱ ╱ Breakout
╱ ╱ candle
╱────╱
Method 3: Two-Candle Rule
After the breakout candle, wait for the NEXT candle to also close beyond the level. Two consecutive closes = stronger confirmation.
Method 4: Volume / Momentum Confirmation
The breakout candle should show significantly more momentum than the consolidation candles. Look for:
- Body at least 2x larger than average candle in the range
- Little to no wick in breakout direction
- Displacement (gap between candles)
Breakout Trading Strategies
Strategy 1: Breakout + Retest (Conservative) ⭐
Best for beginners. Highest win rate.
- Identify a clear range/level with at least 3 touches
- Wait for a strong candle close beyond the level
- Wait for price to pull back to the broken level
- Look for a rejection candle at the retest (pin bar, engulfing)
- Entry: Above the rejection candle
- Stop: Below the retested level (+ buffer)
- Target: Width of the range projected from breakout
Strategy 2: Momentum Breakout (Aggressive)
For experienced traders. Higher reward, lower win rate.
- Identify consolidation with tightening range
- Set alert at the boundary
- When a displacement candle breaks out, enter immediately
- Stop: Below the consolidation / opposite boundary
- Target: 2-3x the range width
Strategy 3: Failed Breakout Reversal (Counter-Trend)
Trade the fakeout for quick reversal profits.
- Price breaks above resistance / below support
- Watch for immediate rejection (long wick, quick reversal)
- Price closes back inside the range
- Enter opposite direction (short after failed upside break)
- Stop: Beyond the fakeout wick
- Target: Opposite boundary of the range
Real Trading Examples
Example 1: USD/JPY Range Breakout
- Setup: USD/JPY consolidating between 149.50-150.50 for 3 days
- Breakout: Strong bullish candle closes at 150.72 (above 150.50)
- Retest: Price pulls back to 150.50, forms a bullish hammer
- Entry: 150.55 | Stop: 150.30 | Target: 151.50
- Risk: 25 pips | Reward: 95 pips = 3.8R ✅
- Result: Price reached 151.45, +90 pips
Example 2: EUR/USD Trendline Break
- Setup: Descending trendline from 1.1050, tested 4 times
- Breakout: 4H candle closes above trendline at 1.0920
- Retest: Price retests trendline at 1.0905
- Entry: 1.0910 | Stop: 1.0880 | Target: 1.0980
- R:R: 2.3:1 | Result: +67 pips ✅
Example 3: Gold Fakeout Reversal
- Setup: Gold at $2,400 resistance (tested 3 times)
- Fakeout: Price spikes to $2,408 but closes at $2,395 (long wick)
- Entry (Short): $2,395 | Stop: $2,412 | Target: $2,360
- R:R: 2.1:1 | Result: +32 points ✅
Example 4: NAS100 Session Breakout (BD Time)
- Asian Session (2:00 AM - 10:00 AM BD): NAS100 ranges 18,200-18,280
- London Open (1:00 PM BD): Breakout above 18,280
- Retest: Price retests 18,280 at 2:30 PM BD
- Entry: 18,290 | Stop: 18,260 | Target: 18,380
- Result: +90 points, 3R
Measuring Breakout Targets
1. Range Width Projection
Measure the height of the consolidation range. Project that distance from the breakout point.
Target = Breakout Level + Range Height
Example: Range = 150.50 - 149.50 = 100 pips
Breakout at 150.50 → Target = 151.50
2. Previous Swing Point
Target the next significant swing high/low or structural level.
3. Fibonacci Extension
Use 1.618 or 2.0 extension from the range for extended targets.
Common Mistakes
❌ Entering on the break candle — Wait for confirmation (close or retest). Most breakouts that reverse do so within the first candle.
❌ No volume/momentum filter — Weak breakouts with small candles often fail. Look for displacement.
❌ Trading breakouts in choppy markets — Breakouts work best after tight consolidation. Wide, choppy ranges produce more fakeouts.
❌ Stop too tight — Place stops beyond the range, not just beyond the level. Give the trade room to breathe.
❌ Not considering HTF context — A breakout against the Daily trend has much lower probability. Trade breakouts WITH the HTF trend.
