Volume Analysis in Price Action — Complete Guide
Master volume analysis for Price Action trading. Learn how volume confirms breakouts, reveals institutional activity, validates patterns, and improves trade confidence.
Why Volume Matters in Price Action
Volume represents the number of contracts/shares traded during a period. It tells you the conviction behind a price move. A breakout with high volume is likely real; a breakout with low volume is likely to fail.
Price shows you WHAT happened. Volume shows you HOW COMMITTED participants were. High volume = strong hands (institutions) are involved. Low volume = weak hands (retail) are moving price.
Volume Principles
Core Rules:
| Principle | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Volume confirms direction | Strong moves should have increasing volume |
| Volume precedes price | Volume often increases before the move |
| Volume validates breakouts | Real breakouts have high volume |
| Volume divergence warns | Price making new highs + declining volume = weakness |
| Low volume = consolidation | Market resting, preparing for next move |
| Climactic volume = exhaustion | Extreme volume spike can signal reversal |

Volume at Key Levels
Support/Resistance:
- High volume rejection at S/R = Level is strong, expect bounce
- Low volume approach to S/R = Level likely to break
- High volume break through S/R = Genuine breakout
- Climactic volume at S/R = Possible exhaustion/reversal
Liquidity Sweeps:
- Volume spike on the sweep candle confirms institutional activity
- Volume returns to normal after sweep = hunt is complete
- Trade the reversal after high-volume sweep
Volume Patterns
Accumulation (Smart Money Buying):
1. Price in range/downtrend
2. Volume increases on DOWN moves (looks bearish)
3. But price doesn't make new lows (absorption)
4. Eventually: explosive upside breakout
Interpretation: Institutions buying into selling pressure
Action: Prepare for bullish breakout
Distribution (Smart Money Selling):
1. Price in range/uptrend
2. Volume increases on UP moves (looks bullish)
3. But price doesn't make new highs (distribution)
4. Eventually: explosive downside breakdown
Interpretation: Institutions selling into buying pressure
Action: Prepare for bearish breakdown
Volume Divergence
Bearish Volume Divergence:
- Price: Making higher highs
- Volume: Making lower highs
- Meaning: Trend losing conviction → potential reversal
Bullish Volume Divergence:
- Price: Making lower lows
- Volume: Making lower lows (selling drying up)
- Meaning: Selling exhausted → potential reversal up
Volume Limitations in Forex
In Forex, true volume isn't available (decentralized market). What brokers show is tick volume (number of price changes). While not perfect, tick volume correlates ~90% with actual volume and is still useful for confirmation.
Where True Volume is Available:
- Stocks (exchange-reported)
- Futures (exchange-reported)
- Crypto (exchange-reported)
- Forex: Tick volume only (still useful)
