Pullbacks — Complete Guide
Master pullback trading. Learn to identify healthy pullbacks, Fibonacci retracement levels, and optimal pullback entry techniques.
What is a Pullback?
A pullback is a temporary retracement against the dominant trend before price continues in the original direction. In an uptrend, a pullback is a dip. In a downtrend, a pullback is a rally. Pullbacks provide the best entry opportunities because you're entering WITH the trend at a better price.
The phrase "buy the dip" is essentially pullback trading. Instead of chasing price after an impulsive move, you wait for price to retrace to a key level and enter at a discount. This gives you a tighter stop loss and a better risk-to-reward ratio.
Why Pullbacks Happen
- Profit-taking — Traders who bought lower take profits, causing temporary selling
- New sellers — Counter-trend traders attempt shorts at highs
- Institutional reloading — Smart money allows a pullback to add to positions at better prices
- Natural market rhythm — Markets move in waves (impulse → correction → impulse)
Healthy vs. Unhealthy Pullbacks
Healthy Pullback ✅ (Trade This)
- Retraces 38.2% to 61.8% of the impulse move
- Maintains structure (no BOS against the trend)
- Pullback candles are SMALLER than impulse candles
- Volume decreases during pullback
Unhealthy Pullback ❌ (Avoid This)
- Retraces beyond 78.6% of the impulse
- Structure breaks (CHOCH against the trend)
- Pullback candles are LARGER than impulse candles
- Increasing volume on the pullback

Fibonacci Retracement Levels
The key Fibonacci levels for pullback entries:
| Level | Significance |
|---|---|
| 38.2% | Shallow pullback — strong trend |
| 50.0% | Moderate pullback — most common |
| 61.8% | Deep pullback — optimal entry (OTE zone) |
| 70.5% | ICT OTE sweet spot |
| 78.6% | Maximum healthy pullback |
The OTE Zone (Optimal Trade Entry)
ICT traders focus on the 61.8% - 78.6% zone as the "sweet spot" for entries. This is where institutions typically reload their positions.
Pullback Entry Strategies
Strategy 1: Fibonacci + S/R Confluence ⭐
- Identify an impulse move
- Draw Fibonacci from swing low to swing high (uptrend)
- Wait for price to pull back to 50-61.8% zone
- Check if a S/R level aligns with the Fib level
- Look for rejection candle at the confluence
- Enter with stop below the 78.6% level
Strategy 2: EMA Pullback
- In an uptrend, wait for price to pull back to 20/50 EMA
- Look for rejection candle at the EMA
- Enter with stop below the EMA
- Target: Previous high or next structural level
Strategy 3: Structure Pullback (BOS Retest)
- After a BOS, wait for price to pull back to the broken level
- The broken level should now act as S/R flip
- Enter on rejection at the retested level
- Stop below the level, target next structural point
Real Trading Examples
Example 1: EUR/USD 61.8% Pullback
- Impulse: EUR/USD rallied from 1.0800 to 1.0920 (+120 pips)
- 61.8% retrace: 1.0920 - (120 × 0.618) = 1.0846
- S/R confluence: Previous resistance at 1.0850 aligns
- Signal: Bullish engulfing at 1.0848
- Entry: 1.0852 | Stop: 1.0825 | Target: 1.0940
- R:R: 3.3:1 | Result: +88 pips ✅
Example 2: Gold Pullback to 50 EMA
- Trend: Gold in strong 4H uptrend
- Pullback: Price dips to 50 EMA at $2,410
- Signal: Hammer candle at $2,410 with long lower wick
- Entry: $2,412 | Stop: $2,395 | Target: $2,450
- R:R: 2.2:1 | Result: +$38 ✅
Example 3: NAS100 BOS Retest (BD Time)
- NY session (8:00 PM BD): NAS100 breaks above 18,300 (BOS)
- Pullback: Price retests 18,300 at 9:15 PM BD
- Signal: Price holds 18,300 with small-bodied candles
- Entry: 18,310 | Stop: 18,280 | Target: 18,400
- Result: +90 points, 3R ✅
Common Mistakes
❌ Entering without confirmation — Don't buy just because price reached a Fib level. Wait for a rejection candle.
❌ Catching falling knives — If the pullback is aggressive (large bearish candles), it might be a reversal, not a pullback.
❌ Too shallow entries — Entering at the 23.6% retrace gives a wide stop and low R:R. Wait for at least 38.2%.
❌ Ignoring HTF context — Only trade pullbacks when the HTF trend is clear and strong.
Summary
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Definition | Temporary retracement within a trend |
| Best Zone | 50-61.8% Fibonacci retracement |
| OTE | 61.8-78.6% — institutional sweet spot |
| Confirmation | Rejection candle at Fib + S/R confluence |
| Caution | Pullback beyond 78.6% may indicate reversal |
