Master trend identification and analysis. Learn uptrend, downtrend, sideways markets, trendlines, channels, and trend exhaustion signals.
What is Trend Analysis?
Trend analysis is the process of identifying the dominant direction of price movement. A trend represents the path of least resistance — the direction price is most likely to continue moving. Trading with the trend is the single most important edge a trader can have.
Over 70% of profitable trades come from trading WITH the trend. Counter-trend trading requires exceptional skill and timing. As a rule, always identify the trend first and trade in its direction.
Three Types of Trends
1. Uptrend (Bullish) 📈
Price makes Higher Highs (HH) and Higher Lows (HL). Buyers are in control.
HH₃ ←── New higher high
╱
HH₂ ╱
╱ ╲╱
╱ HL₂ ←── Each pullback is HIGHER
╱
HH₁
╱ ╲
HL₁ ←── Higher low confirmed
Action: Look for BUY opportunities at HL pullbacks
2. Downtrend (Bearish) 📉
Price makes Lower Highs (LH) and Lower Lows (LL). Sellers are in control.
LH₁ ←── Each rally is LOWER
╲ ╱
╲╱
LL₁
╲
LH₂
╱ ╲
╱ ╲╱
LL₂
╲
LH₃
╱ ╲
╲╱
LL₃ ←── New lower low
Action: Look for SELL opportunities at LH rallies
3. Sideways / Range (Neutral) ↔️
Price oscillates between defined support and resistance without clear HH/HL or LH/LL.

How to Identify a Trend
Method 1: Swing Point Analysis (Most Reliable)
- Mark the most recent swing highs and swing lows
- Are highs getting HIGHER and lows getting HIGHER? → Uptrend
- Are highs getting LOWER and lows getting LOWER? → Downtrend
- Are highs and lows roughly EQUAL? → Range
Method 2: 200 EMA Quick Filter
- Price above 200 EMA → Bullish bias (look for buys)
- Price below 200 EMA → Bearish bias (look for sells)
- Price criss-crossing 200 EMA → No trend (stay out or range trade)
Method 3: 45-Degree Rule
A healthy trend moves at approximately 45 degrees on the chart. Steeper angles (70°+) indicate unsustainable moves likely to be followed by sharp corrections. Flatter angles (20°) indicate weak trends.
Trendlines
A trendline is a diagonal line connecting two or more swing points that shows the angle and direction of the trend.
How to Draw Trendlines:
- Uptrend trendline: Connect 2+ swing LOWS (ascending line)
- Downtrend trendline: Connect 2+ swing HIGHS (descending line)
- Minimum 2 touches to draw; 3 touches = confirmed trendline
Uptrend Trendline:
╱
╱╲ ╱
╱ ╲╱ HL₃
╱╲ ╱
╱ ╲ HL₂
╱────────────── Trendline (connects HL₁, HL₂, HL₃)
╱ HL₁
Downtrend Trendline:
LH₁ ╲
╲ ╱╲────────── Trendline (connects LH₁, LH₂, LH₃)
╲╱ ╲
LH₂ ╲ ╱╲
╲╱ ╲
LH₃ ╲
Trendline Break Rules:
- A wick break is NOT confirmation
- Wait for a candle body close beyond the trendline
- Volume/momentum should increase on the break
- Look for a retest of the broken trendline for entry
Trend Channels
A trend channel adds a parallel line to the trendline, creating a channel within which price oscillates.
Ascending Channel:
╱══════════╱ Upper channel line (resistance)
╱ ╱╲ ╱
╱ ╱ ╲ ╱
╱ ╱ ╱╲╲ ╱
╱ ╱╲╱ ╲╱╱
╱ ╱ ╱
╱──╱────────╱── Lower channel line (support = trendline)
How to Trade Channels:
- Buy at the lower channel line (trendline support)
- Sell/Take Profit at the upper channel line
- Breakout below channel = potential trend reversal
- Breakout above channel = acceleration (often unsustainable)
Trend Strength Assessment
Strong Trend ✅
- Clear HH/HL or LH/LL pattern
- Impulse moves are LONGER than pullbacks
- Pullbacks are shallow (38.2-50% of impulse)
- Price stays above/below 20 EMA
- Candles have large bodies in trend direction
Weak / Exhausting Trend ⚠️
- Impulse moves getting SHORTER
- Pullbacks getting DEEPER
- Price starts crossing the 50 EMA
- More wicks appearing in trend direction
- Equal highs/lows forming (structure losing clarity)
Trend Exhaustion Signals
Signs the Trend is Ending:
- Divergence in momentum — Price makes new high, but candle bodies are getting smaller
- Deep pullback — Pullback retraces 78.6%+ of the previous impulse
- CHOCH — First structural break in the opposite direction
- Climactic candle — Extremely large candle with long wick (blow-off top / selling climax)
- Volume spike on reversal — Suggest institutional unloading / accumulation
Uptrend Exhaustion:
╱╲ ← Climactic candle (long wick = rejection)
╱ │
HH₃ ╱ │ Shrinking impulses
╱╲ ╱ │
HH₂╱ ╲ ╱ │
╱╲ ╱ ╲ │
╱ ╲╱ Deep PB │
HH₁ ╲╱ ← CHOCH (breaks below HL)

Multi-Timeframe Trend Alignment
| HTF Trend | LTF Action | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Uptrend | Buy 4H pullbacks | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very High |
| Daily Uptrend | Sell 4H rallies | ⭐ Very Low |
| Daily Downtrend | Sell 4H rallies | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very High |
| Daily Range | Buy 4H at support | ⭐⭐⭐ Medium |
| Daily Range | Sell 4H at resistance | ⭐⭐⭐ Medium |
If the Daily chart is in a strong uptrend, do NOT look for shorts on the 15M chart. Even if you see a "perfect" short setup, the HTF trend will overpower it more often than not. Your LTF trades should ALWAYS align with the HTF direction.
Common Mistakes
❌ Counter-trend trading as a beginner — Trade WITH the trend until you have 12+ months of experience.
❌ Calling a trend too early — A single HH doesn't make an uptrend. Wait for at least 2 HHs and 2 HLs.
❌ Ignoring trend exhaustion — Don't keep buying into an exhausted uptrend just because "trend is your friend."
❌ Wrong trendline drawing — Connect swing points, not random candle bodies. Use the most obvious, clean connections.
❌ Trading the middle of the range — In sideways markets, trade at the EDGES (support/resistance), not in the middle.
Summary
| Concept | Details |
|---|---|
| Uptrend | HH + HL — buy pullbacks to HL |
| Downtrend | LH + LL — sell rallies to LH |
| Sideways | Equal highs/lows — trade edges or wait |
| Trendline | Diagonal S/R connecting 2+ swing points |
| Channel | Parallel lines creating tradeable range |
| Exhaustion | Shrinking impulses, deep pullbacks, CHOCH |
| Best Practice | Always trade WITH the HTF trend |
