Support & Resistance — Complete Guide
Master support and resistance levels. Learn horizontal levels, S/R flips, dynamic S/R, psychological levels, and zone-based trading.
What is Support & Resistance?
Support and Resistance (S/R) are horizontal price levels where buying or selling pressure has historically been strong enough to stop and reverse price. They are the most fundamental concept in all of technical analysis.
- Support = A price level where buyers consistently step in, preventing price from falling further (floor)
- Resistance = A price level where sellers consistently defend, preventing price from rising further (ceiling)
S/R levels work because of market memory. Traders remember where price reversed before and place orders at those levels again. Institutional traders place large orders at these zones, creating repeatable reactions. The more times a level is tested, the more significant it becomes.
How to Identify Support & Resistance
Rule 1: Look for Multiple Touches
A valid S/R level should have at least 2-3 price reactions (touches where price bounced). More touches = stronger level.
Strong Resistance (4 touches):

Rule 2: Use Candle Bodies, Not Just Wicks
Draw S/R at the cluster of candle closes, not at the absolute wick extremes. Bodies show where price was ACCEPTED; wicks show where price was REJECTED.
Rule 3: Zones, Not Lines
S/R is not a precise line — it's a zone. Price rarely reverses at the exact same pip. Think of S/R as a zone of 10-30 pips (forex) or $5-15 (gold).
Not this: But this:
─── 1.0900 ─── ═══════════ 1.0905
═══════════ 1.0895
(Zone: 1.0895-1.0905)
Rule 4: Higher Timeframe = Stronger Level
A support level on the Daily chart is far more significant than one on the 15M chart. Always prioritize HTF levels.
Types of Support & Resistance
1. Horizontal S/R (Most Important)
Fixed price levels based on historical reactions:
- Previous swing highs and lows
- Areas of price congestion
- Previous day/week/month high and low
2. Dynamic S/R (Moving Averages)
Moving averages act as dynamic (moving) support and resistance:
- 200 EMA — Major institutional level (Daily/4H)
- 50 EMA — Intermediate trend support
- 20 EMA — Short-term trend support
3. Psychological Levels (Round Numbers)
Round numbers attract orders because humans think in round numbers:
- Major: 1.0000, 1.1000, 150.00, $2,000, $2,500
- Minor: 1.0500, 1.0800, 149.50, $2,050
- Micro: 1.0850, 1.0920, $2,425
4. Institutional Levels
Key levels where banks and institutions place orders:
- Previous Day High/Low (PDH/PDL)
- Previous Week High/Low (PWH/PWL)
- Monthly Open
- Quarterly levels
The S/R Flip — Most Powerful Concept
When a support level breaks, it becomes resistance. When resistance breaks, it becomes support. This is called the S/R Flip and it's one of the highest-probability setups in trading.
S/R Flip (Resistance → Support):

╲╱ ╲ ╲╱ ╲╱
═══════════════ ╲══════════════ Level
╲ Breakout
Why It Works:
- Trapped traders: Sellers who shorted at resistance → their stops become BUY orders above the level
- Orderflow shift: Buyers who missed the breakout wait to buy the retest
- Institutional reloading: Banks add to positions on the pullback
How to Draw S/R Levels
Step-by-Step Process:
- Start with the Weekly chart — Mark major levels with 3+ touches
- Move to Daily — Add intermediate levels
- Drop to 4H — Add intraday levels
- Use zones — Draw a rectangle covering the cluster of reactions
- Mark as strong/weak — More touches + HTF = stronger
Which Levels to Prioritize:
- ✅ Levels that caused strong reversals (V-shaped bounces)
- ✅ Levels tested multiple times across different time periods
- ✅ Levels that align with round numbers
- ❌ Levels that caused only small reactions
- ❌ Levels only visible on very low timeframes (1M/5M)
Trading Strategies
Strategy 1: Bounce Trade (Support Buy / Resistance Sell)
- Identify a strong S/R zone with 2+ previous touches
- Wait for price to approach the zone
- Look for rejection candle (pin bar, engulfing) AT the zone
- Enter in the direction of the bounce
- Stop: Beyond the zone (+ buffer)
- Target: Next S/R level or midpoint of range
Strategy 2: S/R Flip Trade (Highest Probability) ⭐
- Mark a clear S/R level
- Wait for price to break through with momentum
- Wait for price to pull back and retest the broken level
- Look for a rejection candle at the retest
- Enter in the direction of the breakout
- Stop: Beyond the retested level
- Target: Next structural level
Strategy 3: Range Fade
- Identify clear range (support floor + resistance ceiling)
- At range extremes, look for rejection signals
- Sell at resistance with stop above, target support
- Buy at support with stop below, target resistance
Real Trading Examples
Example 1: Gold (XAU/USD) S/R Bounce
- Level: $2,350 support (tested 3 times on Daily)
- Approach: Price drops to $2,352 on 4H
- Signal: Bullish engulfing candle with strong close at $2,362
- Entry: $2,363 | Stop: $2,340 | Target: $2,400
- Risk: $23 | Reward: $37 = 1.6R
- Result: Price rallied to $2,405, +$42 ✅
Example 2: EUR/USD S/R Flip
- Level: 1.0900 was resistance (rejected 4 times over 2 weeks)
- Breakout: Strong 4H candle closes at 1.0925
- Retest: Price pulls back to 1.0898 (right at the flip zone)
- Signal: Bullish pin bar at 1.0898
- Entry: 1.0905 | Stop: 1.0878 | Target: 1.0960
- R:R: 2.0:1 | Result: +52 pips ✅
Example 3: USD/JPY Psychological Level
- Level: 150.00 (major round number)
- Context: First time testing 150.00 from below in 3 months
- Reaction: Price reached 150.10, formed a bearish engulfing
- Entry: Sell at 150.05 | Stop: 150.30 | Target: 149.30
- R:R: 3.0:1 | Result: +70 pips ✅
Example 4: NAS100 PDH/PDL Trade (BD Time)
- Previous Day High: 18,350
- London Session (1:00 PM BD): Price sweeps 18,360 (above PDH)
- Signal: Bearish rejection candle after sweep
- Entry: 18,340 short | Stop: 18,375 | Target: 18,250
- Result: -90 points to PDL area, 2.6R ✅
S/R Strength Assessment
| Factor | Adds Strength | Reduces Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Touches | 3+ touches | 1 touch only |
| Timeframe | Weekly/Daily level | 5M/1M level |
| Reaction | Strong V-reversal | Small pause only |
| Volume | High volume at level | Low volume |
| Round Number | Aligns with .000/.500 | Random number |
| Confluence | Multiple factors align | Single factor |
| Recency | Recent reaction | Very old level |
Common Mistakes
❌ Drawing too many levels — Your chart should NOT look like a zebra. Mark only the most significant 3-5 levels visible from a distance.
❌ Using exact lines instead of zones — S/R is a ZONE, not a line. Give it 10-30 pips of width.
❌ Trading S/R without candlestick confirmation — Don't blindly buy at support. Wait for a rejection candle.
❌ Ignoring the trend — S/R in a strong trend often breaks. In an uptrend, resistance is more likely to break. In a downtrend, support is more likely to break.
❌ Forgetting the S/R flip — Once a level breaks, its role changes. Old resistance = new support and vice versa.
Summary
| Concept | Key Point |
|---|---|
| Support | Price floor where buyers defend |
| Resistance | Price ceiling where sellers defend |
| Zone vs Line | Always use zones (10-30 pip width) |
| S/R Flip | Broken S becomes R and vice versa |
| Strength | More touches + HTF + round numbers = stronger |
| Entry | Wait for rejection candle at the level |
| Stop | Beyond the zone with buffer |
