Risk Management in Price Action — Complete Guide
Master risk management for Price Action trading. Learn proper stop placement, position sizing with structure, and drawdown management rules.
Risk Management for PA Traders
Risk management in Price Action trading uses structural stop placement — stops go beyond swing points, Order Blocks, or liquidity levels rather than arbitrary pip distances.
Stop Loss Placement Rules
| Setup Type | Stop Location |
|---|---|
| Order Block entry | Beyond the OB (body) |
| Fibonacci entry | Beyond 78.6% or swing point |
| S/R bounce | Beyond the zone + buffer |
| Trendline bounce | Beyond the trendline |
| CHOCH entry | Beyond the CHOCH swing point |
| Liquidity sweep | Beyond the sweep wick |
Position Sizing Formula
Lot Size = (Account × Risk%) ÷ (Stop Loss pips × Pip Value)
Example:
- Account: $10,000
- Risk: 1% = $100
- Stop: Structure-based = 35 pips
- Pip value: $10 (standard lot)
- Lot size: $100 ÷ (35 × $10) = 0.29 lots
Risk Rules for Price Action
- 1-2% max per trade — non-negotiable
- Stop BEYOND structure — not at structure (give buffer)
- Wider stop = smaller position (not no stop)
- Max 3 correlated positions — EUR/USD + GBP/USD = correlated
- Daily loss limit: 3% — stop trading for the day
- Weekly loss limit: 5% — reduce size next week
- Max drawdown: 10% — full strategy review
Structural vs. Fixed Stops
| Method | Description | Pro | Con |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structural | Beyond swing/OB/zone | Logical, less random SL hit | Sometimes wide |
| Fixed pip | Always X pips | Simple, consistent size | May be inside structure |
| ATR-based | 1.5-2× ATR | Volatility-adjusted | Doesn't respect structure |
Best approach: Structural stop, then calculate position size to fit your risk %.
