Market Structure — Complete Guide
Master market structure analysis. Learn swing highs/lows, HH/HL/LH/LL patterns, BOS, CHOCH, and internal vs external structure for trend identification.
What is Market Structure?
Market Structure is the backbone of Price Action trading. It refers to the pattern of swing highs and swing lows that price creates as it moves through time. By analyzing these swing points, you can determine:
- Whether the market is trending (bullish/bearish) or ranging
- Where momentum shifts occur (CHOCH/BOS)
- The direction of least resistance for your next trade
Without understanding market structure, you're trading blind. Structure tells you WHO is in control — buyers or sellers — and WHEN control shifts. Every strategy in SMC, ICT, and Price Action relies on structure as the first filter.
Swing Highs and Swing Lows
A swing high is a candle high that is higher than the candles on both sides of it. A swing low is a candle low that is lower than the candles on both sides.
Swing High (SH): Swing Low (SL):

╱ ╲ ╱ ╲
╱ ╲ ╱ ╲
Standard Definition (3-candle rule):
- Swing High: A candle with at least 1 lower high on each side
- Swing Low: A candle with at least 1 higher low on each side
Strong Swing Points (5-candle rule):
For more significant swing points, look for candles with 2 lower highs on each side (swing high) or 2 higher lows on each side (swing low). These create stronger structural levels.
The Four Structure Patterns
1. Higher High (HH) & Higher Low (HL) = UPTREND ✅
HH₃
╱
HH₂╱
╱ ╲╱
╱ HL₂
HH₁╱
╱ ╲╱
HL₁
Buyers are in control. Each push higher exceeds the previous.
Each pullback finds support HIGHER than the last.
2. Lower High (LH) & Lower Low (LL) = DOWNTREND ❌
LH₁╲
╲ ╱╲
╲╱ ╲ LH₂
LL₁ ╲╱╲
LL₂╲
╲ LH₃
╲╱
LL₃
Sellers are in control. Each rally fails lower than the previous.
Each drop creates a new lower low.
3. Higher High + Higher Low → Lower High = CHOCH (Change of Character)
HH
╱ ╲
╱ ╲ LH ← First sign of weakness
╱ ╱ ╲
HL ╱ ╲
╱ ╲ Break below HL = CHOCH confirmed
HL ╲
LL ← Structure shift confirmed
4. Range / Consolidation
─────── Resistance ───────
╱╲ ╱╲ ╱╲ ╱╲
╱ ╲ ╱ ╲ ╱ ╲ ╱ ╲
╱ ╲╱ ╲╱ ╲╱ ╲
─────── Support ─────────
Equal highs and equal lows. No clear direction.
Wait for a decisive break above or below.
BOS — Break of Structure
A Break of Structure occurs when price breaks a previous swing high (bullish BOS) or swing low (bearish BOS), confirming the continuation of the current trend.
Bullish BOS
BOS! (price breaks above previous HH)
↑
──HH──────
╱ ╲
╱ HL ╲ ← Price respects HL and pushes through HH
╱ ╲ ╲
HL ╲ New HH
Interpretation: Buyers remain in control. Trend continues up.
Bearish BOS
LL ╱ New LL
╲ ╱ ╱
╲ LH ╱ ← Price respects LH and pushes through LL
╲ ╱
──LL──────
↓
BOS! (price breaks below previous LL)
Interpretation: Sellers remain in control. Trend continues down.
CHOCH — Change of Character
A Change of Character (also called MSS — Market Structure Shift) signals a potential trend reversal. It occurs when price breaks a key swing point in the OPPOSITE direction of the trend.
Bullish CHOCH (Downtrend → Uptrend)
- Price is making LH/LL (downtrend)
- Price sweeps a low (takes liquidity)
- Price then breaks above the most recent LH
- CHOCH confirmed — Buyers have taken control
Bearish CHOCH (Uptrend → Downtrend)
- Price is making HH/HL (uptrend)
- Price sweeps a high (takes liquidity)
- Price then breaks below the most recent HL
- CHOCH confirmed — Sellers have taken control
BOS = Structure break in the SAME direction as the trend (continuation). CHOCH = Structure break in the OPPOSITE direction (potential reversal). Always wait for a candle body close beyond the level — wicks alone don't confirm.
Internal vs. External Structure
External Structure (Macro)
The major swing highs and lows visible on your analysis timeframe (4H/Daily). These define the overall trend direction.
Internal Structure (Micro)
The minor swing points within each leg of external structure. Internal structure shows you the sub-waves within the larger move.
External Structure (Daily):
HH ─────────────────── New HH
╲ ╱
╲ ╱
HL ──────────── HL
Internal Structure (1H, within the HL→HH leg):
int.HH int.HH int.HH
╱ ╲ ╱ ╲ ╱
╱ int.HL ╱ int.HL ╱
╱ ╱ ╱
HL ────────────── → HH
Why This Matters
- External BOS = High-probability continuation signal
- Internal CHOCH = Early warning of potential pullback
- Trade with external structure, use internal structure for entries
How to Map Structure — Step by Step
Step 1: Start with Higher Timeframe (Daily/4H)
- Mark the most obvious swing highs and lows
- Determine the trend: HH/HL or LH/LL?
Step 2: Identify the Most Recent BOS/CHOCH
- Where did the last structure break occur?
- Is the trend intact or shifting?
Step 3: Drop to Entry Timeframe (1H/15M)
- Map internal structure within the HTF leg
- Look for internal CHOCH as potential entry signal
Step 4: Mark Key Structural Levels
- The swing point that was broken (BOS/CHOCH level)
- The origin of the move (order block)
- Equal highs/lows (liquidity targets)
Real Trading Examples
Example 1: EUR/USD Bullish BOS
- Daily: Price in uptrend (HH at 1.0950, HL at 1.0870)
- 4H: Price pulls back to 1.0870 (HL) and bounces
- 1H: Internal structure shifts bullish (CHOCH above 1.0900)
- Entry: Buy at 1.0905 (after CHOCH confirmation)
- Stop: 1.0865 (below the HL) = 40 pips
- Target: 1.0980 (above previous HH) = 75 pips
- R:R: 1.9:1 | Result: +72 pips ✅
Example 2: Gold (XAU/USD) Bearish CHOCH
- 4H: Gold in uptrend, HH at $2,450, HL at $2,410
- Signal: Price breaks below $2,410 HL with strong momentum candle
- CHOCH confirmed: First HL broken = trend shift
- Entry: Sell at $2,405 (retest of broken HL)
- Stop: $2,420 | Target: $2,370
- R:R: 2.3:1 | Result: +35 points ✅
Example 3: NAS100 Structure Analysis (BD Time)
- Session: NY Open at 7:30 PM Bangladesh Time
- 4H: Bullish structure (HH/HL)
- 15M: During London session (1:00 PM BD), price sweeps Asian low
- Internal CHOCH: 15M breaks above London session high
- Entry: At the 15M OB after CHOCH
- Result: +180 points to previous 4H HH
Common Mistakes
❌ Too many swing points — Don't mark every minor swing. Focus on the OBVIOUS ones that are visible from a distance.
❌ Confusing BOS with CHOCH — BOS continues the trend; CHOCH reverses it. Know the difference.
❌ Using wicks as confirmation — A wick through a level is NOT a confirmed break. Wait for a body close.
❌ Ignoring HTF structure — A 5M CHOCH is meaningless if the Daily trend is strongly in the opposite direction.
❌ Not updating structure — Structure is dynamic. Update your swing points as new ones form.
