Market Structure
Complete guide to Market Structure — the backbone of all ICT/SMC trading. Learn to identify trends, reversals, and institutional order flow through price structure.
Definition
Market Structure is the foundation of all price action trading. It describes the pattern of Swing Highs and Swing Lows that price creates as it moves through a market. By reading Market Structure, you can determine:
- The current TREND (Bullish, Bearish, or Ranging)
- WHERE price is likely heading next
- WHEN a trend is changing (reversal)
- WHO is in control — Buyers or Sellers
Bullish Market Structure:
- Series of Higher Highs (HH) and Higher Lows (HL)
- Each pullback makes a HIGHER low than the previous
- Each impulse makes a HIGHER high than the previous
Bearish Market Structure:
- Series of Lower Highs (LH) and Lower Lows (LL)
- Each pullback makes a LOWER high than the previous
- Each impulse makes a LOWER low than the previous
Ranging Market Structure:
- Price oscillates between a defined high and low
- No clear HH/HL or LH/LL pattern
- Equal Highs and Equal Lows form (Liquidity builds on both sides)
Why It Matters
Market Structure tells you THE TREND — and the trend is your greatest edge:
- Bullish Structure = Buy opportunities only — Every pullback is a chance to buy
- Bearish Structure = Sell opportunities only — Every rally is a chance to sell
- When Structure BREAKS = Potential reversal — Time to reassess bias
Without Market Structure understanding:
- You buy in a Bearish trend and wonder why you keep losing
- You sell in a Bullish trend against the institutional flow
- You don't know when to STOP buying and start selling (trend change)
- You take random trades with no directional bias
How It Works
Identifying Swing Points:
A Swing High is formed when:
- The candle has a HIGHER high than the candles on both sides
- Minimum 3-candle formation (high flanked by lower highs)
- Represents a point where SELLERS temporarily overcame BUYERS
A Swing Low is formed when:
- The candle has a LOWER low than the candles on both sides
- Minimum 3-candle formation (low flanked by higher lows)
- Represents a point where BUYERS temporarily overcame SELLERS
Reading the Structure:
- Mark the most recent Swing Highs and Swing Lows
- Connect them to see the pattern:
- HH + HL = Bullish
- LH + LL = Bearish
- Identify the MOST RECENT significant swing point — this is your reference for BOS/CHOCH
- Determine if price is making new extremes or failing
Strong vs Weak Highs/Lows:
| Type | Characteristic | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Strong High | Created by BOS in bearish trend | Protected by institutions — not easily broken |
| Weak High | Last HH before CHOCH/BOS bearish | Will likely be taken (Liquidity target) |
| Strong Low | Created by BOS in bullish trend | Protected — holds as support |
| Weak Low | Last LL before CHOCH/BOS bullish | Will likely be swept |
Institutional Logic
Institutions USE Market Structure to:
- Build the trend — They accumulate positions during pullbacks (HL in uptrend, LH in downtrend)
- Trap retail traders — They create false breaks of structure to sweep Liquidity
- Signal their intentions — BOS confirms they want price to continue; CHOCH signals they're changing sides
- Create Liquidity — Each Swing Point creates Stop Losses above/below it
The Institutional Perspective on Structure:
- A bullish trend exists because institutions are NET BUYERS
- They buy at Discount (pullback lows) targeting previous highs (Liquidity)
- When they're done buying, they ALLOW structure to break (CHOCH) and begin selling
- The new bearish structure means they are now NET SELLERS
Trading Application
Step 1: Determine HTF Structure (Daily/4H)
- Is the Daily making HH/HL? → Bullish bias → Only look for Buys on LTF
- Is the Daily making LH/LL? → Bearish bias → Only look for Sells on LTF
Step 2: Identify Key Structural Levels
- Mark the most recent significant Swing High and Swing Low
- Identify which is STRONG (protected) and which is WEAK (likely to be taken)
Step 3: Wait for LTF Confirmation
- On 15M/5M, wait for price to pull back INTO a Discount zone (for Buys)
- Wait for MSS (Market Structure Shift) confirming the LTF aligns with HTF
Step 4: Enter with Structure
- Buy when LTF turns Bullish (aligning with HTF Bullish)
- Sell when LTF turns Bearish (aligning with HTF Bearish)
- Stop Loss beyond the recent structural point
Multi-Timeframe Structure Rules:
- Monthly → Macro trend direction
- Weekly → Swing trade bias
- Daily → Day trade bias
- 4H → Intraday structure
- 15M/5M → Entry structure
- 1M → Sniper entry (optional)
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Confusing minor and major structure — Not every candle high/low is a Swing Point
- ❌ Trading against HTF structure — A 5M BOS doesn't override a Daily downtrend
- ❌ Not distinguishing Strong vs Weak levels — Weak levels WILL be broken; Strong levels provide protection
- ❌ Changing bias too quickly — One BOS doesn't always mean trend change. Context matters
- ❌ Over-marking structure — Keep it clean. Only mark the MOST significant swing points
- ❌ Ignoring the pullback — Structure isn't just highs and lows; the DEPTH of pullback matters
Advanced Notes
- Sub-structure within a pullback shows whether the retracement is corrective or impulsive
- Order Flow within structure: If each HL in a bullish trend is getting SHALLOWER, momentum is fading
- Time-based structure: New York session often creates or breaks the day's structure
- Fractal nature: Every timeframe has its own structure. What looks bullish on 5M can be a pullback on 4H
- Displacement: The SPEED of structural breaks matters. Fast breaks with FVGs = institutional. Slow grinds = weak
- Protected structures: If a structural low has a large Bullish OB below it with no FVG, it's STRONG
Example
GBP/USD — Multi-Timeframe Structure Analysis:
Daily Structure: Bullish — HH at 1.2750, HL at 1.2580. Current price: 1.2650
- Bias: BULLISH (only look for Buy setups)
- Weak High: 1.2750 (will likely be taken as target)
- Strong Low: 1.2580 (protected — unlikely to break without CHOCH)
4H Structure: Price pulling back from 1.2720, making internal LH/LL
- This is NORMAL in a bullish trend — just a pullback
- Looking for 4H to shift bullish again (BOS above recent LH)
15M Structure: After sweeping a 4H HL at 1.2630 (Liquidity Sweep):
- 15M shows Bullish CHOCH at 1.2645
- Bullish OB at 1.2635-1.2640 (inside 4H Discount)
- Entry: Buy at 1.2638
- Stop Loss: 1.2625 (below sweep low)
- Target: 1.2720+ (4H high / Buy Side Liquidity)
- R:R: 1:6.3
