Order Block
Complete guide to Order Blocks — the institutional footprint candle that marks where Smart Money entered the market. Learn to identify valid OBs and trade them with precision.
Definition
An Order Block (OB) is the last opposing candle before a significant displacement move — it represents the exact price zone where Smart Money placed their orders. It is the most important PD (Premium/Discount) Array in ICT methodology.
- Bullish Order Block: The last BEARISH (down-close) candle before an aggressive move UP (displacement)
- Bearish Order Block: The last BULLISH (up-close) candle before an aggressive move DOWN (displacement)
The Order Block marks institutional entry zones. When price returns to an OB, it often bounces because Smart Money has remaining orders at that level or is defending their position.
Why It Matters
- Order Blocks are your PRIMARY entry zones in ICT trading
- They show exactly WHERE institutions entered — and where they'll likely re-enter or defend
- Valid OBs create the tightest Stop Loss placement = Best Risk:Reward
- Every major market move starts from an Order Block
- They're the footprint that Smart Money CANNOT hide
How It Works
Bullish Order Block Identification:
- Identify a significant displacement move UP (must create FVG/break structure)
- Look at the LAST candle before the displacement that has a DOWN close (bearish candle body)
- The RANGE of that bearish candle (open to low, or open to close) = Bullish Order Block
- When price returns to this zone → BUY opportunity
Bearish Order Block Identification:
- Identify a significant displacement move DOWN
- Look at the LAST candle before the displacement that has an UP close (bullish candle body)
- The RANGE of that bullish candle (open to high, or open to close) = Bearish Order Block
- When price returns to this zone → SELL opportunity
OB Validity Criteria:
| Criteria | Valid OB | Invalid OB |
|---|---|---|
| Displacement after | Strong, creates FVG | Weak, no FVG |
| Structure broken | BOS or CHOCH follows | No structural break |
| Location | In Premium (for sell OB) or Discount (for buy OB) | Counter-zone |
| Touched | Untouched (first return) | Already tested multiple times |
| HTF alignment | With the trend | Against HTF bias |
Institutional Logic
Why Order Blocks work:
- Remaining orders — Institutions rarely fill 100% at once. They leave resting orders at OB for the return
- Position defense — If their entry is at the OB, they'll defend that level with additional buying/selling
- Algorithmic memory — The IPDA remembers where displacement originated and returns price there
- Efficient delivery — Returning to OB rebalances price before continuing
What makes an OB "institutional":
- It MUST have displacement after it (large candle with minimal wicks creating FVG)
- The displacement MUST break structure (BOS or CHOCH)
- Without these, it's just a random candle, not an institutional footprint
Trading Application
Trading Bullish Order Block:
- Identify Bullish OB (last bearish candle before UP displacement with BOS)
- Confirm: OB is in Discount zone of the range
- Wait for price to RETURN to the OB zone
- Enter Buy at:
- OB body midpoint (50% of OB body) — conservative
- OB open (top of OB body) — moderate
- OB low (bottom of wick) — aggressive
- Stop Loss: Below OB low (with 2-5 pip buffer)
- Target: Next BSL (Buy Side Liquidity above)
Trading Bearish Order Block:
- Identify Bearish OB (last bullish candle before DOWN displacement with BOS)
- Confirm: OB is in Premium zone
- Wait for price to RETURN to the OB zone
- Enter Sell at OB body midpoint or OB open
- Stop Loss: Above OB high (with buffer)
- Target: Next SSL below
Refinement techniques:
- Use the body of the OB candle (open to close) rather than full range for precision
- The OB that contains or overlaps with an FVG = STRONGEST entry
- First touch of OB = Highest probability. Second touch = OK. Third touch = Likely to fail
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Marking every candle as an OB — Only candles with displacement + structure break after them are valid
- ❌ Trading OBs against the trend — Bullish OB in a Daily bearish trend = low probability
- ❌ Not checking Premium/Discount — Bullish OB must be in Discount; Bearish OB in Premium
- ❌ Trading OBs that have been mitigated — First touch is best. Multiple touches weaken it
- ❌ Stop Loss inside the OB — Stop goes BELOW/ABOVE the full OB range
- ❌ No displacement = No valid OB — The move after must be aggressive (FVG creation)
Advanced Notes
- Propulsion Block — OB that sits inside a previous FVG = extremely high probability
- Breaker converted from OB — When an OB fails (price trades through), it becomes a Breaker Block
- OB + FVG overlap = Unicorn entry (highest probability zone in ICT)
- HTF OB containing LTF OB = Maximum institutional confluence
- Rejection Block — Close inspection reveals a wick that enters an OB but doesn't close through
- OB mitigation = Price returns and partially fills remaining orders. After full mitigation, OB is spent
Example
EUR/USD — Bullish Order Block Trade:
- 4H Context: Bullish trend, price in Discount
- 15M Displacement: Large bullish candle breaks above 15M Swing High (BOS), creates FVG
- Order Block: Last bearish (red) candle before displacement: Open 1.0875, Close 1.0868, Low 1.0865
- OB Zone: 1.0865 - 1.0875
- Price returns: After BOS, price retraces into OB zone
- Entry: Buy at 1.0870 (OB midpoint)
- Stop Loss: 1.0862 (below OB low with 3 pip buffer)
- Target: 1.0930 (BSL above)
- R:R: 1:7.5, +60 pips on 8 pip risk
