Equal Lows
Complete guide to Equal Lows — the most obvious Sell Side Liquidity formation that Smart Money targets to build Long positions. Learn identification and trading strategies.
Definition
Equal Lows occur when price reaches the same low point two or more times, creating a flat or near-flat support level. In ICT/SMC, equal lows are NOT support — they are Liquidity magnets representing the maximum concentration of Sell Side Liquidity (SSL).
Equal Lows are the mirror of Equal Highs:
- Equal Highs = Buy Side Liquidity above (Smart Money targets to SELL)
- Equal Lows = Sell Side Liquidity below (Smart Money targets to BUY)
Every trader who bought at these lows has a Stop Loss BELOW them. Every breakdown trader has a Sell Stop below. This creates a massive pool of Sell orders that Smart Money uses as counterparty Liquidity to fill their Buy positions.
Why It Matters
- Equal Lows = Guaranteed future target for price to sweep
- They indicate WHERE Smart Money will accumulate Buy positions
- They help set Take Profit for Short trades (TP at Equal Lows)
- They warn you NOT to Buy at this level until it's swept (your stop will be taken)
- After the sweep of Equal Lows, the BEST Long entries form
How It Works
Formation:
- Price drops to a level (e.g., 1.0850) and bounces → First low
- Price rallies, pulls back to approximately 1.0850 again → Second low (Equal Low formed)
- Each touch adds Stop Losses and Pending Sell orders below
- Retail sees "double bottom" or "strong support" → Buys with stops below
- Smart Money waits, then sweeps below → Fills Buy orders against retail Sell stops
What happens when Equal Lows are swept:
- Price drops below the equal lows briefly (5-20+ pips)
- All Sell Stops trigger → Creates massive Sell order flow
- Smart Money BUYS against this Sell order flow
- Price reverses aggressively upward
- This is the IDEAL Buy entry point
Equal Lows Classification:
| Type | Liquidity Level | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Double Lows (2 touches) | High SSL | Wait for sweep to Buy |
| Triple Lows (3 touches) | Very High SSL | High priority sweep target |
| Quad+ Lows (4+ touches) | Maximum SSL | Extremely high probability sweep |
| Near-Equal (within 1-5 pips) | Counts as Equal Lows | Same trading approach |
Institutional Logic
Why Smart Money loves Equal Lows:
- Maximum counterparty Liquidity — Thousands of Sell Stops below = Perfect for filling Buy orders
- Retail psychology exploit — "Support has held 3 times, it must be strong" → More buyers = More stops below
- Controlled entry price — They can buy at Discount (below previous support) with minimal slippage
- Narrative control — The "breakdown" panics retail into selling, providing even more Liquidity
The institutional sequence:
- Build Equal Lows (push price to same level repeatedly)
- Allow retail to accumulate Buy positions (more stops build below)
- Sweep below (trigger all stops, create panic selling)
- Absorb all Sell orders with institutional Buy orders
- Rally price aggressively (distribution phase up)
Trading Application
Strategy 1: Equal Lows as Take Profit (Bearish Trade)
- You're Short targeting the next SSL
- Equal Lows below = Your logical TP level
- Place TP just above Equal Lows (2-5 pips above)
- Example: Short from 1.0920, Equal Lows at 1.0850 → TP at 1.0853
Strategy 2: Equal Lows Sweep as Buy Entry
- Mark Equal Lows on chart (2+ touches at same level)
- Confirm HTF is BULLISH (price in Discount, Daily making HL)
- Wait for price to SWEEP below Equal Lows (goes 5-20+ pips below)
- Watch for Bullish MSS/CHOCH on 5M/15M immediately after sweep
- Enter Buy at OB/FVG formed after the reversal
- Stop Loss: Below the sweep extreme (the lowest wick)
- Target: Buy Side Liquidity above (equal highs, swing highs)
Strategy 3: Avoid the Trap
- Never Buy AT Equal Lows — they will be swept
- Never place Stop Loss just below Equal Lows — it will be taken
- Wait patiently for the sweep, THEN buy
- The entry after sweep is always better than trying to "buy support"
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Buying at Equal Lows — They WILL be swept. Wait for the sweep
- ❌ Stop Loss just below Equal Lows — First target for Smart Money
- ❌ Treating double bottoms as Buy signals — In ICT, they're Liquidity targets
- ❌ Missing the sweep entry — After sweep + MSS, you must act quickly
- ❌ Expecting support to hold — "Support" in ICT = Liquidity pool to be swept
Advanced Notes
- Equal Lows + HTF Discount = Highest probability Buy zone after sweep
- Equal Lows + Bullish OB below = Price sweeps lows into OB then reverses
- Failed sweep (price sweeps and continues lower) = Genuinely bearish. Exit immediately
- Multiple Equal Low levels — Price may sweep one level then continue to sweep another
- Equal Lows on Weekly/Monthly = Major institutional accumulation zones
- Equal Lows + SMT Divergence = Strongest reversal confirmation after sweep

- Entry: Buy at $2,320 (Bullish OB after CHOCH)
- Stop Loss: $2,308 (below sweep extreme)
