Liquidity Sweep
Master Liquidity Sweep — the moment Smart Money takes out Stop Losses to fill institutional orders. Learn to identify sweeps and enter the real move that follows.
Definition
A Liquidity Sweep occurs when price briefly moves beyond a key level (Swing High/Low, Equal Highs/Lows, or Session Level) to trigger resting Stop Loss orders and Pending Orders, then reverses in the opposite direction. It is the MANIPULATION phase of the AMD cycle.
The sweep is characterized by:
- Price going BEYOND the level (not just touching it)
- Quick rejection — a wick or 1-2 candles beyond, then reversal
- Displacement in the opposite direction after the sweep
- Often creating an MSS (Market Structure Shift) on the lower timeframe
Liquidity Sweep = The institutional "loading" moment. After the sweep, Smart Money has filled their orders and the TRUE move begins.
Why It Matters
- The Liquidity Sweep is your #1 entry trigger in ICT methodology
- It distinguishes between a real breakout and a fake move (manipulation)
- It tells you Smart Money has just COMPLETED their position building
- After a sweep, Risk:Reward is optimal (tight stop at sweep extreme, large target to opposing Liquidity)
- 70%+ of Kill Zone setups begin with a Liquidity Sweep
How It Works
Buy Side Liquidity Sweep (Bearish Setup):
- Buy Side Liquidity exists above (swing highs, equal highs)
- Price spikes ABOVE the level → Triggers Buy Stops and Stop Losses
- Smart Money SELLS against these triggered Buy orders
- Price reverses DOWN aggressively (displacement)
- This is your CUE to look for Sell entries
Sell Side Liquidity Sweep (Bullish Setup):
- Sell Side Liquidity exists below (swing lows, equal lows)
- Price drops BELOW the level → Triggers Sell Stops and Stop Losses
- Smart Money BUYS against these triggered Sell orders
- Price reverses UP aggressively (displacement)
- This is your CUE to look for Buy entries

Institutional Logic
The Sweep is NOT random — it's engineered:
- Setup Phase: Smart Money allows obvious levels to form (equal highs/lows, clear swings)
- Build Phase: Retail traders place orders at these levels (stops above/below)
- Accumulation: Liquidity builds over time as more traders see the level
- Trigger: At a precise time (usually Kill Zone), the algorithm drives price into the Liquidity
- Fill: Institutional orders fill against the triggered retail orders
- Reversal: With positions filled, Smart Money drives price in their intended direction
Why Kill Zone timing matters:
- London Open (2:00-5:00 AM EST / 12:00-3:00 PM BD) — Most common sweep time
- NY AM (7:00-10:00 AM EST / 5:00-8:00 PM BD) — Second most common
- Sweeps outside Kill Zones are less reliable
Trading Application
The Complete Liquidity Sweep Trade:
-
Pre-Session Analysis:
- Identify key Liquidity levels (PDH/PDL, Asian H/L, equal H/L, swing points)
- Determine Daily Bias (which Liquidity pool is the TARGET?)
- Note: If Bullish → expect SSL sweep → then rally to BSL
-
Wait for Kill Zone:
- Mark your time window (London or NY AM in your timezone)
- Be at the screen during these hours
-
Identify the Sweep:
- Price moves beyond the key level (at least a full wick or body close)
- The move should be into YOUR expected direction's Liquidity
- (Bullish bias = expect sweep of lows; Bearish bias = expect sweep of highs)
-
Confirm Reversal:
- After the sweep, drop to 5M/1M
- Wait for MSS/CHOCH with displacement
- Note the OB and FVG created by the displacement
-
Enter:
- Buy/Sell at the OB or FVG (use limit order for precision)
- Stop Loss: Beyond the sweep extreme + buffer (2-5 pips)
- Target: Opposing Liquidity pool
Sweep Quality Assessment:
| Factor | High Quality | Low Quality |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Kill Zone | Random hours |
| Displacement | Strong, creates FVG | Weak, grinding |
| HTF Alignment | With Daily/4H bias | Against HTF trend |
| Level swept | Major (HTF swing, equal H/L) | Minor (internal LTF) |
| MSS after | Clear, immediate | Unclear, delayed |
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Trading the sweep itself as a breakout — The sweep IS the manipulation. Don't chase it
- ❌ Entering before confirmation — Wait for MSS AFTER the sweep, not during
- ❌ Expecting every touch of a level to be a sweep — Sweeps go BEYOND the level, not just touch it
- ❌ Ignoring time — Sweeps during Kill Zones >> Sweeps during Asian session
- ❌ Too tight stops — Place SL beyond the sweep extreme with buffer
- ❌ Trading sweeps against HTF bias — Only trade sweeps that align with your bigger picture direction
Advanced Notes
- Sweep + FVG = Institutional confirmation — If the sweep creates a void on reversal, it's genuine
- Multiple sweeps — Sometimes price sweeps one level, pulls back, then sweeps a higher/lower level. The SECOND sweep is often the final one
- Shallow sweep vs Deep sweep — Deep sweeps (going far beyond) are more convincing reversals
- Sweep without reversal = Genuine breakout — If price sweeps and CONTINUES with multiple candle closes beyond → It's not a sweep, it's a real break
- News-driven sweeps — NFP, FOMC can create sweeps but are harder to trade (wider stops needed)
- Sweep + SMT Divergence — If correlated pairs diverge at the sweep point → Extremely strong confirmation
Example
GBP/USD — London SSL Sweep Buy Trade:
-
Pre-London Analysis:
- Daily Bias: Bullish (price in Discount, making HL)
- SSL below: Asian Low at 1.2680, Previous Day Low at 1.2665
- BSL above: Equal Highs at 1.2750 (TARGET)
-
London Kill Zone (12:30 PM BD):
- Price drops below Asian Low (1.2680) to 1.2660 — sweeps PDL
- SSL swept — retail short sellers and breakdown traders stopped in
-
Confirmation (12:45 PM BD):
- 5M Bullish CHOCH at 1.2690 with displacement
- Bullish FVG: 1.2672-1.2685
- Bullish OB: 1.2665-1.2672
-
Entry:
- Buy at 1.2678 (CE of FVG on retrace)
- Stop Loss: 1.2655 (below sweep extreme)
- Target: 1.2750 (BSL — Equal Highs)
-
Result: +72 pips, R:R 1:3.1
