Break of Structure (BOS)
Master Break of Structure (BOS) — the confirmation signal that institutions are continuing the current trend. Learn to identify valid BOS and trade with momentum.
Definition
Break of Structure (BOS) occurs when price breaks beyond a previous Swing Point IN THE DIRECTION of the current trend. It is a CONTINUATION signal — confirming that the existing trend remains intact and institutions are pushing price further.
- Bullish BOS: Price breaks ABOVE a previous Swing High → Trend continues UP
- Bearish BOS: Price breaks BELOW a previous Swing Low → Trend continues DOWN
BOS is NOT a reversal signal. It confirms: "The trend is still in play. Smart Money is still accumulating/distributing in the same direction."
Why It Matters
- BOS tells you the trend is HEALTHY and likely to continue
- It creates new structural reference points for entries
- Valid BOS with Displacement creates tradeable FVGs and Order Blocks
- It differentiates between a PULLBACK (temporary) and a REVERSAL (structural)
- Without understanding BOS, you'll exit winning trades too early or miss continuation entries
How It Works
Bullish BOS Process:
- Price is in an uptrend (HH + HL pattern)
- Price pulls back (makes a HL)
- Price then rallies ABOVE the previous Swing High
- The moment it closes above → Bullish BOS confirmed
- The pullback that preceded it = new Higher Low (potential entry zone)
Bearish BOS Process:
- Price is in a downtrend (LH + LL pattern)
- Price pulls back (makes a LH)
- Price then drops BELOW the previous Swing Low
- The moment it closes below → Bearish BOS confirmed
- The pullback that preceded it = new Lower High (potential entry zone)
Key Rules for Valid BOS:
- Must be a CANDLE BODY close beyond the level (wicks don't count for strong BOS)
- Should ideally have Displacement (large-bodied candle with minimal wicks)
- The swing point being broken should be significant (not minor internal structure)
- BOS with FVG creation = Strong institutional BOS
- BOS without displacement (slow grind) = Weak / potentially fake
Institutional Logic
When institutions create BOS:
- They've completed accumulating at the pullback low/high
- They're now DISPLACING price with aggressive orders
- The Displacement candle IS their entry footprint (this becomes the Order Block)
- They leave behind FVGs (Imbalances) that price will likely return to fill
- After BOS, they expect price to pull back to the OB/FVG before continuing
What BOS creates:
- New Order Block (last opposing candle before displacement)
- New Fair Value Gap (imbalance from aggressive move)
- New Liquidity (the BOS swing creates stops above/below)
- New structural reference (the high/low that was broken becomes support/resistance)
Trading Application
Trading WITH BOS (Continuation):
- Identify a clear trend (HH/HL for bullish, LH/LL for bearish)
- Wait for price to pull back (create a new HL or LH)
- Wait for BOS to confirm the trend continues
- After BOS, look for price to retrace to:
- The FVG created by the displacement
- The Order Block that caused the BOS
- The OTE zone (62-79%) of the BOS leg
- Enter at the PD Array with Stop Loss beyond the swing point
- Target: Next Liquidity pool (previous high/low or equal highs/lows)
BOS as Entry Confirmation (on LTF):
- HTF shows bullish bias (Daily bullish structure)
- Price reaches a 4H/1H Discount PD Array
- On 15M/5M, wait for a Bullish BOS confirming buyers are stepping in
- Enter after the BOS at the OB/FVG created
- This is the Multi-Timeframe alignment method
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Trading immediately after BOS without waiting for pullback
- ❌ Counting wick-only breaks as BOS (body close is stronger confirmation)
- ❌ Marking BOS on tiny internal structure (stick to significant swing points)
- ❌ Confusing BOS with CHOCH (BOS = continuation, CHOCH = reversal)
- ❌ Not checking if BOS has Displacement (no FVG = weak BOS)
- ❌ Trading counter-trend BOS (a 5M bullish BOS in a 4H bearish trend is dangerous)
Advanced Notes
- BOS + FVG = Institutional — If the break creates an imbalance, Smart Money is behind it
- BOS without FVG = Retail — Slow, grinding breaks are often traps
- BOS Candle = Order Block — The candle that breaks structure is itself an entry zone on retest
- Liquidity Engineering — After BOS, new Liquidity forms above/below the new extreme
- Multiple BOS in same direction = strong momentum. Trade aggressively
- BOS near HTF PD Array — BOS occurring at a Daily/Weekly OB is VERY high probability
Example
NAS100 — Bullish BOS Continuation Trade:
- 4H Structure: Bullish, making HH/HL. Last HH: 18,250
- Pullback: Price retraces to 4H HL zone at 18,050
- 15M: Shows Bullish BOS at 18,120 (breaks above 15M Swing High)
- Displacement: BOS candle is large bodied, creates FVG (18,095-18,110)
- Wait: Price retraces to FVG zone
- Entry: Buy at 18,102 (CE of FVG)
- Stop Loss: 18,045 (below the pullback HL)
- Target: 18,250+ (4H previous HH — Buy Side Liquidity)
- R:R: 1:2.6, +148 points
