Buy Side Liquidity
Complete guide to Buy Side Liquidity (BSL) — understanding Stop Losses and Pending Orders above Swing Highs that Smart Money targets for position building.
Definition
Buy Side Liquidity (BSL) is the cluster of resting Buy orders above Swing Highs, relative equal highs, and key resistance levels. These orders include:
- Buy Stop orders from breakout traders waiting to enter Long positions
- Stop Loss orders from Short sellers protecting their positions
- Buy Limit orders stacked above previous highs
When price reaches these levels, all these Buy orders get triggered simultaneously, creating a surge of Buy-side order flow that Smart Money uses as counterparty Liquidity to fill their SELL orders.
In Simple Terms: BSL = "All the Buy orders sitting above obvious highs" — and Smart Money drives price UP to these levels specifically to SELL against them.
Why It Matters
- BSL is the TARGET in bearish setups — Smart Money sweeps BSL before selling
- BSL is the TAKE PROFIT in bullish setups — Price rises TO BSL
- Understanding BSL prevents you from buying breakouts that are actually Liquidity Sweeps
- The most obvious highs (equal highs, triple tops) are the BIGGEST BSL targets
- After BSL is swept, high-probability Sell opportunities emerge
How It Works
Where Buy Side Liquidity Forms:
- Above Swing Highs — Every time price makes a high and reverses, traders who sold short at that high place Stop Losses above it
- Above Equal Highs — When price touches the same high 2-3 times, even MORE stops accumulate above. This is the clearest BSL
- Above Obvious Resistance — Textbook resistance levels attract massive clusters of orders above
- Above Session Highs — PDH (Previous Day High), London High, Asian High = Session BSL
- Above Trendline — Traders using trendlines place stops above → Trendline BSL
BSL Hierarchy (strongest to weakest):
- Equal Highs (2-3 touches at same price) = Maximum BSL
- Strong Swing Highs in counter-trend position = Strong BSL
- Session Highs (PDH, Weekly High) = Moderate BSL
- Minor internal swing highs = Weak BSL (taken first as Internal Liquidity)
Institutional Logic
How Smart Money uses BSL:
Scenario: Institution wants to SELL large position
- They identify BSL above the market (equal highs, obvious resistance)
- They PUSH price up toward this BSL (or allow it to drift up)
- As price reaches BSL → Buy Stops trigger → Creates massive Buy orders
- Institution SELLS against all these Buy orders (perfect counterparty)
- Institution is now Short at a Premium price with great fills
- Price reverses and drops (Distribution move down)
Scenario: Institution has active Buy position
- They want to TAKE PROFIT on their Long position
- They identify BSL above (where they can sell their longs)
- They drive price INTO the BSL zone
- Buy Stops triggering provide the Liquidity for them to close their Longs
- After they've exited → Price drops (no more institutional buying)
Trading Application
Using BSL as TARGET (Bullish Trade):
- You're Long and need a Take Profit level
- BSL (equal highs, swing high above) = Your logical TP
- As price approaches BSL, be ready to close or tighten stops
- Example: Buy at 1.0850, Equal Highs at 1.0920 = TP at 1.0918 (just below BSL)
Using BSL Sweep as ENTRY (Bearish Trade):
- Identify BSL above (equal highs, obvious highs)
- Wait for price to SWEEP the BSL (go above the level)
- Watch for rejection — Bearish MSS on LTF after the sweep
- Enter Sell after confirmation
- Stop Loss: Above the sweep high
- Target: Sell Side Liquidity below (equal lows, swing lows)
Daily BSL Reference Points:
- Previous Day High (PDH) = Daily BSL
- Previous Week High (PWH) = Weekly BSL
- Asian Session High = Asian BSL (swept during London often)
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Buying breakouts above BSL — The break above highs IS the Liquidity Sweep, not a real breakout
- ❌ Not marking BSL — If you don't mark it, you can't target it or avoid being trapped
- ❌ Placing Take Profit above BSL — Price often reverses AT BSL. Place TP just below
- ❌ Ignoring the sweep — Price going above highs then reversing = BSL taken. Time to Sell
- ❌ Thinking BSL is support — BSL is a TARGET for Smart Money, not a buying zone
Advanced Notes
- BSL + Premium Zone = Highest probability Sell zone (price is expensive AND sweeping stops)
- BSL taken + SMT Divergence = Extremely strong reversal signal
- Multiple BSL levels — Price may take one level then target a higher one. Use HTF for final target
- BSL with FVG above — If there's an FVG above BSL, price may go higher to fill it before reversing
- Liquidity engineering — Smart Money sometimes creates BSL by pushing price to create equal highs BEFORE sweeping
- Time of BSL sweep — Sweeps during Kill Zones are most reliable
Example
AUD/USD — BSL Sweep Sell Trade:
- Context: Daily bearish structure. Price in Premium zone
- BSL Identified: Equal Highs at 0.6720 (3 touches — massive BSL)
- NY Kill Zone: Price spikes to 0.6728, sweeping BSL above equal highs
- Confirmation: 5M Bearish CHOCH at 0.6715 after the sweep
- Entry: Sell at 0.6718 (Bearish OB formed after CHOCH)
- Stop Loss: 0.6732 (above sweep high)
- Target: 0.6650 (Sell Side Liquidity — swing low below)
- R:R: 1:4.9, +68 pips
