Premium & Discount
Master Premium and Discount zones — the institutional framework for identifying WHERE to buy and WHERE to sell based on price position within a range.
Definition
Premium & Discount is the ICT framework that divides ANY price range into two zones using the 50% level (Equilibrium):
- Premium Zone (above 50%): Price is EXPENSIVE → Only look for SELL setups
- Discount Zone (below 50%): Price is CHEAP → Only look for BUY setups
- Equilibrium (50%): Fair value — no edge for either side
The concept is simple: Institutions BUY cheap (Discount) and SELL expensive (Premium). Just like a business buys wholesale and sells retail, Smart Money accumulates positions at Discount and distributes at Premium.
How to calculate:
Equilibrium = (Swing High + Swing Low) / 2
Premium = Everything ABOVE Equilibrium
Discount = Everything BELOW Equilibrium
Why It Matters
- Premium/Discount gives you IMMEDIATE clarity on trade direction
- It prevents the #1 retail mistake: buying at tops and selling at bottoms
- If price is in Premium → You should ONLY sell (or wait for Discount)
- If price is in Discount → You should ONLY buy (or wait for Premium)
- It aligns your trades with institutional order flow automatically
How It Works
Applying Premium/Discount to a Dealing Range:
- Identify the most recent significant Swing High and Swing Low
- Draw the 50% level (Equilibrium) between them
- Everything above 50% = Premium (Sell zone)
- Everything below 50% = Discount (Buy zone)
Fibonacci Levels for Precision:
| Fib Level | Zone | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| 0% | Swing Low (extreme Discount) | Deepest Buy zone |
| 23.6% | Deep Discount | Strong Buy zone |
| 38.2% | Discount | Buy zone |
| 50% | Equilibrium | No trade / Fair value |
| 61.8% | Premium | Sell zone |
| 70.5% | Deep Premium (OTE for sells) | Sweet spot for Sells |
| 79% | Extreme Premium | Highest probability Sell zone |
| 100% | Swing High (extreme Premium) | Deepest Sell zone |
OTE (Optimal Trade Entry): 62-79% of a range. For Buys = 62-79% of Discount leg. For Sells = 62-79% of Premium leg.
Institutional Logic
Why institutions follow Premium/Discount:
- Capital efficiency: Buying at Discount maximizes profit potential per unit of risk
- Order flow mechanics: At Discount, there's SSL (Sell Side Liquidity) → Counterparty for Buy orders
- Statistical edge: Price in Discount has positive expectancy for longs; Premium for shorts
- Risk management: Buying at Discount means your Stop Loss is smaller (closer to structure low)
Smart Money Premium/Discount cycle:
- Price drops to Discount → Institutions BUY (accumulate)
- Price rises through Equilibrium (trending)
- Price reaches Premium → Institutions SELL (distribute)
- Price drops back → Cycle repeats
Trading Application
Step 1: Define your range
- Use the current HTF Dealing Range (the most recent major swing high to low)
- OR use the most recent expansion leg (BOS to BOS)
- Mark 50% (Equilibrium) on your chart
Step 2: Determine current position
- Where is price NOW? Premium or Discount?
- If Premium → Only look for SHORT entries
- If Discount → Only look for LONG entries
- At Equilibrium → WAIT for price to commit to a zone
Step 3: Find entry within correct zone
- In Discount: Look for Bullish OB, FVG, Breaker in the 62-79% Discount range
- In Premium: Look for Bearish OB, FVG, Breaker in the 62-79% Premium range
- Entry at these PD Arrays within the correct zone = Institutional alignment
Step 4: Set targets
- If buying in Discount → Target: Premium zone (specifically BSL in Premium)
- If selling in Premium → Target: Discount zone (specifically SSL in Discount)
- Minimum target = Equilibrium (50%)
- Maximum target = Opposing Liquidity pool
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Buying in Premium — Price is expensive. Wait for Discount
- ❌ Selling in Discount — Price is cheap. Wait for Premium
- ❌ Ignoring the 50% level — Equilibrium is a powerful magnet and decision point
- ❌ Using wrong range — Make sure you're using the CURRENT relevant dealing range
- ❌ Not updating the range — When structure breaks, the range changes. Update your levels
- ❌ Trading at Equilibrium — 50% offers no statistical edge. Wait for commitment to a zone
Advanced Notes
- Nested Premium/Discount: The Daily range has P/D, the 4H range within it has its own P/D, and the 1H has its own. Best entries = Discount on ALL timeframes simultaneously
- Premium of a Discount move: Within a bullish retracement, the 62-79% zone is the "Premium of the Discount" — ideal entry
- Equilibrium as magnet: Price is drawn to 50% of ANY range. Use this for initial targets
- Time-based P/D: Price spends about 50% of its time in each zone over complete cycles
- P/D inversion: When structure breaks, Premium becomes new Discount (and vice versa)
- Combining P/D with time: Entering at Discount during a Kill Zone = Maximum probability
Example
NAS100 — Buy in Discount:
- 4H Range: Swing High 18,500 / Swing Low 17,800
- Equilibrium: (18,500 + 17,800) / 2 = 18,150
- Current price: 17,950 → IN DISCOUNT ✓ (below 18,150)
- OTE Zone (62-79% of Discount): 17,890 - 17,845
- Setup: 15M Bullish OB at 17,870 (inside Discount OTE)
- Entry: Buy at 17,870
- Stop Loss: 17,790 (below Swing Low)
- Target: 18,400 (BSL in Premium)
- R:R: 1:6.6, +530 points
