SMT Divergence (Smart Money Technique)
Master SMT Divergence — when correlated pairs diverge, revealing institutional bias. Learn to use correlation analysis for high-probability directional trades.
Definition
SMT Divergence occurs when correlated currency pairs or instruments fail to make equal highs/lows simultaneously, revealing which asset Smart Money is favoring. When EUR/USD makes a higher high but GBP/USD makes a lower high, this divergence signals institutional bias.
Why It Matters
- SMT identifies which pair is stronger (where Smart Money is positioned)
- Provides directional bias confirmation
- Highest probability when combined with ICT concepts
- Reveals institutional positioning early
How It Works
Bullish SMT: Correlated pair makes lower low, your pair makes higher low (bullish bias for your pair) Bearish SMT: Correlated pair makes higher high, your pair makes lower high (bearish bias for your pair)
Common Correlations: EUR/USD & GBP/USD, AUD/USD & NZD/USD, ES & NQ, Gold & Silver
Trading Application
- Monitor correlated pairs on same timeframe
- Identify divergence at swing points
- Trade the STRONGER pair in its favor
- Use ICT setups (FVG, OB, OTE) for entry
Example
EUR/USD makes higher high at 1.0950, GBP/USD makes lower high at 1.2640 → Bearish SMT for GBP → SHORT GBP/USD on next FVG
