Liquidity Grab
Understand Liquidity Grab vs Liquidity Sweep — the quick, aggressive wick that takes Liquidity and immediately reverses. Learn to distinguish grabs from genuine breakouts.
Definition
A Liquidity Grab is a rapid, aggressive wick beyond a key level that immediately reverses, taking out resting orders in a single candle's wick. Unlike a Liquidity Sweep (which may involve 1-3 candles beyond the level), a Grab is characterized by its SPEED and VIOLENCE — price pierces the level and snaps back within the same candle or the very next one.
Key distinction:
- Liquidity Sweep: Price may spend 1-3 candles beyond the level before reversing
- Liquidity Grab: Price WICKS beyond and reverses within the SAME candle (long wick, small body)
The Liquidity Grab is often visible as:
- A long upper wick (Bearish Grab of BSL)
- A long lower wick (Bullish Grab of SSL)
- A pin bar / hammer / shooting star at a Liquidity level
- Price action known as "Stop Hunt" in retail terminology
Why It Matters
- Liquidity Grabs are the FASTEST confirmation that Smart Money has taken Liquidity
- They provide the tightest Stop Loss placement (just beyond the wick)
- They occur at the EXACT moment of institutional order filling
- Candle closes after a grab often confirm immediate reversal direction
- They're especially common during Kill Zone opens (London, NY)
How It Works
Bullish Liquidity Grab (SSL Taken):
- Key low exists (swing low, equal lows, session low)
- A single candle drops below with a long lower wick
- The candle CLOSES back above the level
- The long wick = Smart Money grabbed SSL and bought
- Next candles move UP — the real direction
Bearish Liquidity Grab (BSL Taken):
- Key high exists (swing high, equal highs, session high)
- A single candle spikes above with a long upper wick
- The candle CLOSES back below the level
- The long wick = Smart Money grabbed BSL and sold
- Next candles move DOWN — the real direction
Grab vs Sweep vs Break:
| Price Action | Description | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| Grab | Wick beyond, same candle close back | Strongest reversal signal |
| Sweep | 1-3 candles beyond, then reversal | Strong reversal signal |
| Break | Multiple candle CLOSES beyond level | Genuine breakout — not a grab |
Institutional Logic
The Liquidity Grab represents the MOST EFFICIENT institutional entry:
- Smart Money fills orders in milliseconds during the grab
- The wick represents the exact price range where institutional orders were filled
- The body close direction shows their intended direction
- They don't NEED to stay beyond the level — they got what they needed (counterparty Liquidity)
Why grabs are aggressive:
- High-frequency algorithms execute thousands of orders during the grab
- Market makers widen spreads momentarily during the grab
- The entire process happens in seconds to minutes
- Retail traders see a "spike" — institutions see an "order fill"
Trading Application
Trading the Liquidity Grab:
- Identify Liquidity Level — Mark where stops are clustered
- Wait for Grab Candle — Long wick that goes beyond and closes back
- Confirm with candle close — The grab candle should close in your intended direction
- Enter on next candle — After the grab candle closes:
- If Bullish Grab (long lower wick) → Enter Buy on next candle open
- If Bearish Grab (long upper wick) → Enter Sell on next candle open
- Stop Loss — Beyond the wick extreme (the very tip of the grab wick)
- Target — Opposing Liquidity pool
Best Timeframe for Grabs:
- 15M grabs at 4H/1H levels = Excellent swing entries
- 5M grabs at 15M levels = Day trade entries
- 1M grabs at 5M levels = Scalp entries
- 4H grabs at Daily/Weekly levels = Position entries
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Confusing a grab with a breakout — If the candle CLOSES beyond = Not a grab
- ❌ Entering during the grab — Wait for the candle to CLOSE first
- ❌ Stop Loss at the level — Put it beyond the WICK tip, not at the level
- ❌ Expecting grabs at every level — Not all levels produce grabs. Context matters
- ❌ Trading grabs against HTF trend — Only trade grabs in your bias direction
Advanced Notes
- Grab + Order Block — If the grab wick reaches into a HTF OB → Highest probability
- Grab + FVG Fill — If the grab wick fills a previous FVG → Institutional fill confirmed
- Multiple grabs at same level — If price grabs the same level twice → Second grab is usually final
- Grab timing — First 30 minutes of London/NY often produce the best grabs
- Grab on news — News events can create valid grabs but require wider stops
- Grab wick = Future support/resistance — The tip of the grab wick often acts as a future reference point
Example
USD/CAD — Bearish Liquidity Grab:
- Setup: 4H Equal Highs at 1.3650 (BSL above)
- Daily Bias: Bearish (price in Premium, making LH)
- NY Open (5:30 PM BD): Single 15M candle spikes to 1.3665 (grabs BSL)
- Candle closes at 1.3640 with massive upper wick → Bearish Liquidity Grab confirmed
- Entry: Sell at 1.3638 (open of next candle)
- Stop Loss: 1.3670 (above grab wick tip)
- Target: 1.3550 (SSL — swing low below)
- R:R: 1:2.75, +88 pips
