Equal Highs
Complete guide to Equal Highs — the most obvious Buy Side Liquidity formation that Smart Money targets. Learn to identify, avoid being trapped, and trade the sweep.
Definition
Equal Highs occur when price reaches the same high point two or more times, creating a flat or near-flat resistance level. In ICT/SMC, equal highs are NOT support/resistance — they are Liquidity magnets that WILL be targeted by Smart Money.
Equal Highs represent the MAXIMUM concentration of Buy Side Liquidity because:
- Every trader who sold at that level has a Stop Loss ABOVE it
- Every breakout trader has a Buy Stop order ABOVE it
- Every textbook trader sees "strong resistance" and piles up orders around it
The ICT truth about Equal Highs: They are NOT resistance to respect. They are TARGETS to be swept. The more times price touches the same high, the MORE Liquidity builds above, and the MORE certain it is that Smart Money will take it.
Why It Matters
- Equal Highs = Guaranteed future target for the algorithm
- They tell you WHERE price is heading (eventually)
- They help you set Take Profit (if you're Long, TP at Equal Highs)
- They warn you NOT to Sell at this level (because price WILL go above it)
- After the sweep of Equal Highs, the BEST Short entries form
How It Works
Formation of Equal Highs:
- Price rallies to a level (e.g., 1.0950) and reverses → First high
- Price pulls back, then rallies again to approximately 1.0950 → Second high (Equal High formed)
- Possibly third touch → Triple top = Even MORE Liquidity above
- Each touch adds more Stop Losses and Pending Orders above the level
- Smart Money KNOWS this Liquidity exists and will eventually take it
What happens at Equal Highs:
- Retail traders see "double top" or "triple top" → They Sell with Stop Loss just above
- Each failed attempt to break = more sellers, more stops above
- Smart Money waits until MAXIMUM Liquidity has accumulated
- Then drives price above → All stops trigger → Smart Money Sells against the Buy orders
- Price reverses aggressively below
Equal Highs Classification:
| Type | Description | Liquidity Level |
|---|---|---|
| Double Highs | 2 touches at same level | High BSL |
| Triple Highs | 3 touches at same level | Very High BSL |
| Quad+ Highs | 4+ touches | Maximum BSL — highest priority target |
| Near-Equal | Highs within 1-5 pips of each other | Still counts as Equal Highs |
Institutional Logic
Why Smart Money CREATES Equal Highs:
Sometimes institutions deliberately push price to the same level multiple times to:
- Build maximum Liquidity — Each touch encourages more sellers = more Stop Losses above
- Create the "narrative" — Retail sees "strong resistance" and sells more aggressively
- Trap the maximum number of traders — More sellers = more Liquidity to Buy against
- Set up the final sweep — When they're ready to reverse, they have massive Liquidity available
The Psychology Trap:
- Retail: "Price rejected 1.0950 three times. It's STRONG resistance. I'll sell with SL at 1.0960"
- Smart Money: "Perfect. Thousands of stops above 1.0950. I'll spike it to 1.0965, fill my Sell orders against their Buy stops, then drive price to 1.0800"
Trading Application
Strategy 1: Equal Highs as TARGET (If you're Bullish)
- Price is in a bullish trend
- Equal Highs exist above at 1.0950
- Your Buy trade TARGET = 1.0948 (just below Equal Highs)
- Don't be greedy — close BEFORE the Equal Highs (sometimes price reverses right at them)
Strategy 2: Equal Highs Sweep as SELL Entry
- Mark Equal Highs on your chart (clear double/triple top)
- Identify that you're in a BEARISH HTF context (price in Premium, Daily bearish)
- Wait for price to SWEEP above the Equal Highs
- Watch for immediate reversal (Bearish CHOCH/MSS on 5M/15M)
- Enter Sell after confirmation
- Stop Loss: Above the sweep spike
- Target: Sell Side Liquidity below
Strategy 3: Avoid the Trap
- If you see Equal Highs and want to Sell → DON'T sell until they're swept
- The sweep will happen. Wait for it
- Your Sell entry AFTER the sweep = much better risk-adjusted entry
Common Mistakes
- ❌ Selling at Equal Highs — Price WILL take them. Don't sell until AFTER the sweep
- ❌ Placing Stop Loss just above Equal Highs — That's the FIRST place that gets hit
- ❌ Treating double tops as reversal patterns — In ICT, double tops are Liquidity targets, not patterns
- ❌ Not recognizing near-equal highs — Highs within 2-5 pips count as Equal Highs
- ❌ Being Long and not taking profit before Equal Highs — Price may reverse right at them
Advanced Notes
- Equal Highs + HTF Premium = Extremely high probability reversal after sweep
- Equal Highs + Bearish OB above = Price may spike into OB after sweeping, then reverse hard
- Time decay of Equal Highs — The longer they exist, the more Liquidity builds (higher probability sweep)
- Failed sweep of Equal Highs — If price sweeps but doesn't reverse → VERY bullish continuation
- Equal Highs on multiple timeframes — Weekly Equal Highs are much more significant than 15M Equal Highs
- Equal Highs + SMT Divergence — If a correlated pair makes a NEW high while the other only SWEEPS Equal Highs → Strong reversal signal
